I love the last Frost* album to absolute bits. I even bought a real CD version. It's overproduced in a most pleasant way and has hooks instead of solos. And the 𝓣𝓞𝓜 𝓕𝓘𝓛𝓛𝓢

I love all the Frost* stuff. Jem Godfrey comes from a pop music background (writing/producing/mixing for other artists) out of a means to make a living at music, so i guess that's why he tends to overproduce his own band's work, but like you said, in a pleasant way. He's used to making stuff "radio-ready". All the Frost* albums sound great and the songwriting and musicianship is always stellar. They are always lumped in the Progressive Rock genre and that is definitely a big part of their sound, but i would say Progressive Pop (or Prog Pop/Rock?) is more fitting. Great band and the new album is killer!

I have to get my six year old up in the mornings to get ready for school. I usually do that by playing this really loud.

Then we have a B-boys morning, as she is a fan. Which is nice.

Going back to the Betty Davis thread, this is some seriously powerful funk. It's hard to imagine even hard core black radio playing this back then. Most definitely Pat Boone wouldn't have been able to cover this one.

OMD - Messages

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXvlzUCB74o

Loved it in the 80s - now having learned a bit about music, I'm seeing what makes it tick.

Loved that lead synth sound, especially when I saw them live. Turns out it's the cheapest synth they could find, plus layering, chorus and reverb.

Reasynth + ozzifier + reaverb makes a great version.

OMD, like B52s, were able to make cool music with those very uncool transistor organs.

Igorrr always on my playlist. Not sure how to describe their sound, but its a blend of black metal, baroque, choral, idm, breakcore, and trip hop.

Clandestine by Entombed, there's a less squashed full-dynamic-range edition available. This album has the coolest downtuned rhythm guitar tone and turns out it's actually a shitty solid state Peavey combo (with everyone's favourite Boss HM2 pedal). I love this album mix in general, it's so hefty.

There are a bunch of these Zildjan LIVE videos, and all of them are really good. Kaz Rodriguez, Larnell Lewis, JD Beck, Sarah Thawer, Omar Hakim, etc... This one is particularly good as well. I'd not been that aware of Stanton Moore, but he is a great mixture of pocket and technical ability and they seriously funk this one up.

An oldie but a goodie. This is Natalie Dawn (from Pomplamoose) with Lauren O'Connell. It's just a gorgeous piece of work, including bowed banjo which you don't see every day. Some of it is recorded outside and even the birds come in on queue.

Lari Basilio, Far More album. Basic tracks for all nine songs were recorded in one day at Capitol Records, with a great group of musicians. There are some videos from the session, but I would love to see even more of it.

She's one of those for whom it's almost too easy. The previous set of tunes she did, with the dream team (East, Colaiuta, Phillinganes) was really nice. Seriously tasty guitar work.

Yup, love her phrasing. After been listening so much of all the instrumental/shred guitar players back in the day, I got kinda tired of it at some point. Basilios works have been like a joyful refresher of what it can be at its best.

I think it's funny that the one album sitting visible in the background in that video is Black Sabbath's studio debut. I have always wondered if it was her choice or if she was trolled just a bit by the interviewer.

That was one of the first albums I ever owned.

Yes, Molly has just continued to grow as a musician. This flatpicking style is a bit like a supercharged Maybelle Carter. Definitely also check out her recent conversation with Mary Spender and her version of "She's a rainbow" ,one of the great covers IMHO.

Speaking of covers, one of Scary Pockets' new ones. At first it I was a little iffy about this approach (odd for someone who is way more into soul and funk than synth-pop). It's just that, as synth pop songs go, this one is pretty iconic. But it ultimately is a pretty amazing performance. The rhythm section is stupidly tight.

And one of my favorites of theirs. Yet again proving you just need a few good musicians and a good song.

And, while on Radiohead, they do an amazing cover of this one as well:
