Default Chordino, cool chord recognition for free

Chordino is a Vamp-plugin for Sonic Visualiser and other Vamp-Hosts for chord recognition/estimation.

You can download it from:
http://isophonics.net/nnls-chroma

As we know we can also define Sonic Visualiser as one editor in Reaper.

Here is one example of output from a song of this forum:
Estimated chords for The Reckoning - Final.mp3, which you can find here, http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=68410 :

Just tried.

Got a few chords missed from random test songs but still quite impressive overall.

Thanks for posting this.

It's not that far out.

The notes in G7(sus4) or G11 at the third fret are (starting from the low note):
G D F C D G

The notes in Dm7 are
D F A C

So the only note error is an A instead of a G.

btw. I still haven't got this thing working with Sonic Visualiser. I put the dll at the following path, but Sonic Visualiser doesn't find it.

C:\Program Files\Vamp Plugins

Any clues as to how I get chordino working. I'm probably being a bit thick

Thanks, I've got it working. I needed to put the dll directly into C:\Program Files\Vamp Plugins and not into a subfolder.

Sonic Visualiser can see it now.

you know, having vamp plugin support in reaper would be nice, we could have the plugins drop markers with chord names

I just wanted to bump this thread for anyone searching for totally free chord recognition or identification software. Chordino is a VAMP plugin that works with Sonic Visualizer, which is a free-standing program that can be used as an external editor within Reaper if you wish. It was so easy to get it working, even *I* could do it. Here is a video that provides a complete explanation of how to get it working:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojtka...hannel&list=UL

I've tried it now on a few songs where I had band tracks recorded and I wanted to add a few tonal flourishes....and it figured out what chords they were playing better than I could!

Thanks to the creators of these great and very useful programs.

A little tutorial on plugin usage:

- Sonic Visualiser: https://www.sonicvisualiser.org/download.html (it's a VAMP host, so it supports VAMP plugins)
- Chordino and NNLS Chroma: http://www.isophonics.net/nnls-chroma
- https://www.vamp-plugins.org/download.html page has other VAMP plugins and instructions at the bottom on where to put them
- run Sonic Visualiser, load an audio, Transform -> Analysis by Plugin Name -> Chordino -> Chord Estimate...

(check the bit-ness between plugins and host (x86 for x86; x64 for x64))

It also works in Audacity. I guess it catches the plugins from the common "Program Files\Vamp Plugins" folder (Windows).
The command is in the Analyze menu.

I also found CLAM-Chordata project which has multiple panels with different chords representation.
It's a little buggy and old, and open-source, but serves as an alternative.

---

Also there are more useful VAMP plugins for audio analysis on that download page.
Like Silvet Note Transcription that can be used to determine pitch distribution for example.
One of its commands is Pitch activation distribution which helps to determine pitches/notes usage in an audio segment.
It's a little havier/slowlier to analyze the data but gives good results.

That's a reasonable functional interpretation, just minus the bass note.

Sus chords can be thought of as a way of playing a plagal cadence (IV-I) and a perfect cadence (V-I) mashed together. IV/V-I. So far, so academically crusty, but bear with me...

That was the original idea in classical music, where the suspended tone would resolve (very churchy). More recently, we tend to leave the suspension hanging proud. Like Lennon does.

Alternatively, you're taking the elaborated cadences IV-V-I or ii-V-I (which are functionally just variants of each other) and sticking the first two chords in a blender. The ingredients for the blender are often notated as slash chords - F/G or Dm7/G (both strictly G9sus).

F/G is a perfectly clear and clean harmonic gesture, Dm7/G is fuller since it contains the 5th of G (as here). Both avoid using the 3rd of G, which is a problem tone in a sus chord because it can form an unpleasant minor 9th with the suspended 4th (or 11th if you like).

(Jazz takes things further by often adding a 13th - that would be FM7/G - and optionally altering the 9th and 13th for added "aren't I clever"-ness.

In fact, in jazz and some other styles, if there's a dedicated bass part and you're not it, when you see Gsus you'll often just play some kind of F or Dm7 and leave the root to Plucky Joe.)

I'm intrigued to find out how this plugin works - thanks for flagging it up OP.

I want to try this, but I keep getting an error. I don't see anything anywhere to download Chordino. I'm seeing this nnls-chroma-win32-v1.1. I have extracted that rar file to windows/Program Files/Vamp plugins.
When I open sonic visualizer, I can drag an audio file in, get it to playback, but when I go to Transforms, I get this error. Layer generation failed. Failed to generate derived layer. What am I missing?
I'm running Win7, 64bit

It also says there are no transforms installed. Everything from the folder mentioned above is in the Vamp Plugins folder. Right?

For 64 bit systems you need to install to:
Program Files (x86)/Vamp Plugins

Mine still says No Plugins Installed no matter where I put it. Program Files, x86, doesn't matter. Does it matter where Sonic Visualizer is installed? It goes to C:\Program Files\Sonic Visualizer by default. The Vamp Plugins folder is NOT created in the x86 folder. It is in the 64-bit Programs folder.
Then I unrar the nnls-chroma-win32-v1.1 to c:\Program Files (x86)\Vamp Plugins. (which I have to create, because it's not there otherwise)So what is it that I'm missing? Thanks! Gotta gig but I'll check back in a few hours!

I just manually created a folder called "Vamp Plugins" (maybe it has to be case-exact?) in "Programs (x86)" and unpacked the files into that. NB - the compressed file nnls-chroma-win32-v1.1 contains a directory called the same thing. You need the actual base files that are in that folder in the "Vamp Plugins" root folder.

When you open "Vamp Plugins" the files you should see:
nnl-chroma.n3
nnl-chroma.dll
nnls-chroma.cat

(Plus some readme stuff).

It shows up fine in Sonic Visualiser installed to its default location, but in Audacity I had to enable it in "Analyse > Add/Remove Plugins".

Actually, I can see myself using it more as a quick reference in Audacity, rather than REAPER.

Initial testing gives very impressive results. Obviously, there's some occasional entertaining garbage displayed in between the real chords, but it's very usable indeed.

C'mon guys, lay off. Nothing wrong with Audacity.
I often use it for quick jobs when I don't feel the need to get out the full toolkit. Oh, and tagging MP3s, cough cough...
And I do actually know a couple of people who use it to produce full multitrack stuff that sounds pretty good.

Thank you. I got it working now! Pretty cool so far.

There's some interesting beat and tempo detection plugins in the Queen Mary package - you could maybe cobble together some automatic tempo mapping if you knew what you were doing...

I'll have to look into Sonic Visualluzer and Chordino.
I would guess the ultimate test for chord recognition would be Steely Dan or maybe some of Chick Corea's stuff.

It's not free, but HoRNet SongKey MK2 can detect and display the chords of a tune in real-time.

He has frequent sales, so you could probably get it for about $8.

Haven't put it to the jazz test yet - I've a feeling it's probably going to assume any tones higher than the 7th are melody. I suppose it might occasionally analyse rootless voicings as some kind of triad or 7th chord - eg it might call Dm9 Fmaj7 and F13#11 Ebaug.

Also, since a jazz bassline is more fluid, things could get interesting/messy.

Although perhaps its "library" could be expanded a bit to optionally include chords such as 7b9, 7alt, 7#11, susb9 (this last one critical for Chick stuff...)

Must dig into some of the research work the guy did sometime and try to get a rough idea of how his analysis algorithm works.

It is tweakable, but I'd want to understand the parameters before getting into that. Might be possible to create a jazz preset. There's mention of a chord.dict file but it doesn't seem to come with, so perhaps has to be created by the user.

I have tested it on a couple of tracks that have sound FX intros and outros - it sometimes seems to find consonant triads in traffic noise!

Nice historical collection, and I don't wish to be unkind but stuff from that era isn't exactly harmonically demanding. Although it would be interesting to see how chroma analysis would cope with florid polyphony over very faint banjo chording and virtually non-existent bass.

I'm thinking more on the lines of postbop stuff like Chick's Humpty Dumpty or Herbie's The Sorcerer. Both of which I know btw, but my interest is more in the testing.

Who knows - maybe we'll soon be at the stage of auto transcription. Then nobody will have to go through the headaches we older dudes had. And nobody will have very well trained ears either...!

Default Thank you Jason

Thank you so much Jason: I have been reading and thinking about this for countless year trying to reconcile what I heard in modern music and jams, to what I could read in more classical info. You block of text, so wonderfully pulled together what for years felt so disparant in my head. Your post is one of the most valuable things I have read in recent memory.

Peace,
Dwight

[QUOTE=Jason Lyon;1982537]That's a reasonable functional interpretation...

Sus chords can be thought of as a way of playing a plagal cadence (IV-I) and a perfect cadence (V-I) mashed together. IV/V-I. So far, so academically crusty, but bear with me...
