Preferences->Rendering->Limit apply fx/render stems to realtime.

That also works to force freezing to real time operation but I don't have MIDI instrument hardware so I couldn't check if it would work correctly for that.

Nice, thanks! That’s something I also wanted to know if is possible.
Do we have to check - uncheck this option between online- offline renders or Reaper will understand if we have reainsert in the chain and so in this case makes the render/freeze online?

You will have to manually check and uncheck it in the preferences...(Unless there's some way to code a ReaScript action for toggling it.)

A ReaScript action would add so much in that goodness but I don't know how to code and.. hey... at least I'm glad there is already this realtime option!

I had totally forgotten I had done those actions for the SWS plugin...

Well it "works" but of course what it can't necessarily do is make sure that the hardware has the same settings as when it was "frozen" when/if you choose to "unfreeze". In this case of a MIDI synth, you probably control that via program change, sysex, ccs or whatever. More generally, though, like if you had an all analog compressor or like guitar pedals or something...

A toggle button which could reflect the on/off state of this would be perfect !

THis can only be done via SWS I think.

That is an example case why this would be useful:
