Default Media Explorer: Play Through Selected Track not working?

I can't get media explorer to play through selected track. Doesn't matter which track I select, audio goes out the main output. This is with Reaper 5.78 on MacOS 10.12.6

Are there recording or monitoring options I have to set? Have I misunderstood what is meant by "selected track"? Have tried it with different audio interfaces, not that that should make a difference..

Yeah I think the track needs to have monitoring enabled, and also be selected.

No, monitoring enabling is not needed. Track only has to be selected, then sound from media explorer sounds through this "selected" track

Additional info: When more tracks are selected, then it plays through the track with lower index (e.g. Track 4 and Track 7 are selected, sound comes through the Track 4. (Order of track when selecting them, using Ctrl modifier key, does not matter).

screenshot / video / gif to demonstrate please

edit

I think it's probably a misunderstanding of how it should work
With "play through selected track" is enabled

you first select a track, then play in the media explorer. If you change selected tracks you need to restart playback or change sounds in the media explorer before the routing changes.
If multiple tracks are selected the first is used.
If no tracks are selected the main-out is used.

Yeah I get that. I renamed my ~/Library/Application Support/Reaper folder, let it create a fresh profile, and then it worked again as expected. Still can't figure out what setting I changed that messed it up. Or maybe something just got scrambled after all the updates. Fortunately I didn't have Reaper heavily customized.

I’m experiencing problems previewing files via “Play through selected track” in Media Explorer. It looks like aac and apple lossless formats are not supported. They simply won’t play through the selected track. Is there any solution?

Yes, m4a files not working here. They play, you can hear sound, but no activity on selected track. Wav working fine, with signal on selected track.
