REAPER CONTEST - APRIL 2019
(THIS MONTH ALL PLUGINS ARE ALLOWED!)

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

MIXING: 5-20 April
VOTING: 21-28 April
RESULTS: 30 April
FEEDBACK: 1-4 May

APRIL 2019 PROJECTS
REAPER CONTEST ANALYTICS

__________________________________________________

Hello everybody

This month is rather exciting because it's the first time you have absolutely no limitation over the plugins you want to use!

This month you are only asked to provide your mastered track. Obviously, still compliant with the usual loudness specifications (see website for more info).

The track to work on is called Bitter by the band Fytakyte. It's a very nice soft rock song that I hope you will enjoy! Let's see what we're all capable of!

That being said, as always you can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.

Happy mixing!
Dave

Dumb question maybe, do you want -14 LUFS or -1dB?

Rule # 3
Respect the formats: the mastered mix has to be a 44.1 kHz, 24 bit, -14 int. LUFS (limited to -1 dB) FLAC

That doesn't answer the question.

Integrated loudness of -14 LUFS, peaks at -1dB (true peaks are usually preferred)

Nearly there, it is just on 5AM here and I have been working on it all night. Just got to finish off automating the backing vocals.
Then listen to it for the next few days to see if I still like it

Default Last Minute submission

Well, I went on my honeymoon this month. And now that I'm back, I saw I only had like, 3 hours to mix and submit the song! Well, that wouldn't be any trouble if it weren't for the fact that I'm pretty sure using non-reaper plugs actually made this more difficult than usual.
Weird, huh? Since I wasn't limited, it actually took me longer to mix because I kept considering the type of comp I wanted to use, what kind of eq I wanted, etc. These things are way easier when it's limited to reaper plugins only!

I think, at least, that's because it's easier to figure out how to get what you want out of a tool you are forced to use than it would be to figure out which tools to use for which job! At that point, it's a matter of taste and preference instead of just doing the mix!

Anyway, really enjoyed this one and I look forward to voting

I completely agree with you man! I managed to mix the song this month and to be honest I simply used stock plugins when mixing because I didn't have access to my usual collection because I'm using my macbook and it was simply faster. I only used a few paid ones during mastering but that's it.

Can't wait to vote and hear what you guys did!

Guys, I was wondering... do you still want to be able to share your projects at the end of each month? Let me know!

Personally I've found it very helpful. I think it's one of the great things about using only native plugins for the contest. This month it probably wouldn't make sense though, with no one able to see the third party plugins they don't own.

I think it’s a very important part of the process, and one thing that separates this contest from all the others on the internet.

That said I really enjoyed using all my non-reaper tools this month!

Does any of you use the top-down approach while mixing? I used to hate it because it sounded counter intuitive to me but oh my... now I'm completely addicted to it!

I do top-down triage, mixing into a compressor and using mixbus eq to find areas with build up that I address on busses or individual tracks.

I wonder if it would be possible to get a copy of these various mixes so I can import them into my Reaper to help me get an idea of how competent people (as oppopsed to me) do their work? Or is there anywhere else (stash!) where I could find any finished projects I would be able to view in Reaper?

Thanks Dave but I meant would it be possible (I suppose the individual people would have to give their consent) to have the Reaper files in Reaper format before they rendered them into MP4 or whatever so I, and other people, could see how they worked in our Reaper program?

Ah you mean the projects...

We can. But there is one problem. We normally always share the projects because we are always allowed to only use stock plugins. However, this month there was no limitation over the plugins...

I personally mixed with only reaper plugins, so I can share my session if someone is interested. I used a few paid ones during mastering but the main stuff was in the mixing project.

Anybody can feel free to share his/her own project if has only used native plugins

I am not quite sure what you mean by that but if you are willing to share your session I would be very interested, as a really, really amateur mixer.

The only way people can share their own projects and for people to open them without any missing files, is to use the same set of tools (plugins and source files).
That's the reason why one the rules of this contest is "ONLY REAPER PLUGINS ALLOWED".
However, this month we wanted to change a few things just to have some fun, and everybody was allowed to use whatever he/she wanted at the expense of not sharing the projects as usual.

Hope it's more clear

P.S I can't seem to able to attach .aif files to this post, so I'll give you a link to download to only IR I used: https://stash.reaper.fm/v/36207/A%20Plate.aif

Congratulations to winner,

Here’s my notes with which i tried to find three mixes to vote. So these are not comments, but rather subjective remarks from quick elimination prcess.

======

First I took my mix away (08)

Then I listened and looped chorus around 0:50-1:04.

I chose to the second round mixes 03, 04, 07, 13

My votes went to 04, 03, 13 in that order

======

Too spacey

Chorus
weak drums, kick dominates too much
Tambourine too loud

03 +
Verse
Sounds great

Chorus
great drums
Toms low end uncontrolled

04 +
Overall sound a bit dry, maybe too dry, but otherwise excellent and balanced

Verse
Guitas role good be a bigger

Chorus
great drums

05
Verse
Bass a bit too stereo, drums weak

Chorus
Guitars dominate too much over drums

06
Sounds like a rough mix, bass weak
Vocals dominate too much, mid heavy

07 +
Verse
Vox not optimal

Chorus
Balanced, vox maybe too far

08
my mix

09
Suffocated overall sound
Vox too far, bass dominates over guitars
Overall sound a bit weird

10
Little messy overall sound
Drum space has something wrong
No optimal vox osund

11
Suffocated overall sound, especially vox and cymbals
Too bass heavy
Vox too dark

12
Overall sound nice
Guitars not optimal, something honky with them

13 +
Nice natural overall sound
Verse
Vox feels a bit separate from the band
Too bass heavy

Chorus
Nice sound, but kick too heavy?

Thanks for letting me know about the bass. My room isn't treated, so I usually hear too much bass compared to what's actually in the mix. This time I made an effort to mix at very low volume, in order not to excite the room. Next time I'll try to be even more careful. I should definitely use reference mixes but I always forget or I'm too lazy to choose one.
About the kick... do you mean heavy in terms of processing or in terms of volume?

when you open my project Reaper is going to tell you that there is a file called "A Plate.aif" missing. Select that file you've just downloaded and bingo
