Default IAC midi and SimpleSynth problem: press play in Reaper, SimpleSynth re-sets to Piano

I use SimpleSynth as a quick MIDI synth sometimes. On my laptop (MacBook Pro 15" 2010 running Mavericks) it works as it should: I set Reaper to output using the IAC bus, I set SimpleSynth to listen to the IAC bus, I set my instruments on my channels, route Reaper's outgoing MIDI to the channels I want, presto: cheesy MIDI instrumental success.

The problem:

On my students' laptops (MacBook Pros of various types, various OS), they try to do the same thing, but SimpleSynth keeps resetting to the Piano sound on all channels when they hit "play" in Reaper and start sending MIDI out. It's as if there's some kind of bank select command happening in the background that re-sets all the channels to the default sound.

Does anyone know why this could be?

cheers,

j

In Reaper's Preferences -> (Audio) -> MIDI devices
there's a tickbox at the bottom: On stop/play: Reset CC".

Not sure if that's it, but maybe worth a try.

If that's not it and everything else fails, one could put a program change event with the correct patch (sound) at the beginning of the MIDI and it should work as desired. (I'm no Mac user though so don't know for sure).

Thanks, nofish - the "cc" option didn't affect things, but it was definitely worth a try.

I eventually moved to using the AU DLSMusicDevice instrument plugin in Reaper, and setting instruments sounds in the Bank/Program change area of the MIDI editor. I actually like this better, so in a way I'm glad I ran in to that snag with SimpleSynth.

cheers,
