Reaper manual
It would be nice if at sometime in the future if reaper would switch away from the dreadful off format for their manual.

I agree, the manual is very good. My only two nitpicks are the lack of clickable navigation in the table of contents and the index.

Just load it into Chrome (or whatever), hit Ctrl+F and search. Works great!

I think the OP is nicholas in disguise, just trying to get us to say how great the manual is.
It worked!

Thanks for pointing this out, I've been trying to make the ToC clickable for years but nothing seems to do it. If anybody knows how please let me know!
As a workaround, the ToC will be visible permanently in the bookmarks panel on the left if you open it up.

I don't understand your statement I just tried clicking on the table of contents and it went to where it is suppose to. If it is not working your most likely using one of those bogus pdf reader downloads. I use adobe acrobat x pro to read pdf files.

Thanks for the info.
Unless I'm mistaken, the pro version of Acrobat that you refer to is the one that can be used used for creating PDF files and which for many people would be quite costly. Most REAPER users don't really need it in their lives and don't want to fork out unnecessary $$$ (nor should they).
Unfortunately, ToC links don't seem to be clickable in the free Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader, which I believe are two of the most widely used PDF reading programs.

The version I use does create pdf files and came with my adobe CS6 Suite.

If you have an iPad (I assume iPhones too), the clickable ToC works when you open the manual in iBooks. No idea if it works on Android or other mobile platforms.
Thanks for the outstanding work Nicholas - I RTFM often.

Hi Geoff-
I have Foxit Reader Version 8.3.1.21155 and all ToC links are clickable here.

That is so weird. I have Version: 9.1.0.5096 and whereas document hyperlinks work OK for me, ToC links don't!

Strange. I have 9.0.1.1049 and I cannot click the ToC so I can jump to a topic.
But the links throughout the document I am able to click. For example page 18 tels about Reamote (printed in blue font): when I click on it, it jumps to this topic and with Alt and back arrow I can jump back to page 18. Although, this is also working with Arcobat Reader, and Acrobat Reader too is not able to click ToC.
BTW: big thanks to Nicholas for a great job maintaining the Reaper manual!

FoxitReader v614.0217 here (from 2014).
ToC and in-text links both work here (once I had selected the "hand" tool!)

Strange: I've selected the handtool as well, but the ToC doesn't work. Would this be a "feature" of the newer version I have?

Ah, no they do not work. I always use the Foxit Bookmarks list in the left-hand panel. those links work there.

Yes, that's what I suggest people should do. Leaving the bookmarks panel in view is probably simpler and more convenient than jumping back and forth to the ToC anyway ...

I've just noticed that in the latest Acrobat Reader DC the 'Contents' links now work (as well as all the other scattered links). (Windows 10).

I've just checked my Adobe Acrobat reader and it is up to date.
I opened the 5.95 manual and the ToC isn't clickable.
I then downloaded and opened the 5.961 manual and the ToC is clickable. So it must be something to do with the compiler used for the latest manual, I think.
Good news, then

Ah, interesting. Yes, I just checked with 5.96... not clickable, but 5.961...clickable (both in the same Acrobat Reader).

Correct: ToC 5.961 is clickable. Previous version until 5.40 ToC are NOT clickable. From 5.30 backwards ToC was clickable.
Strange or spooky?

I can confirm that it works again, using Chrome's PDF viewer on Linux here. TOC links haven't worked for me for ages.

Well, then you should really try 5.961 (ReaperUserGuide5961d.pdf) because there they are working again!

As mentioned, in 5.961 manual all TOC and in text links seems to be working (at least here on Sumatra PDF Reader).
I found a couple glitches though: the two links referring to
stores.lulu.com
don't work and return a "404 page not found" fancy page, probably Lulu.com changed their website structure.
They are easy to find, just search for lulu.com in the PDF.
Page 2 and 39 in current 5.961e PDF.

oops and thanks. I do check these links from time to time but obviously they need changing. Will fix for next edition.

the manual is as good as any manual I have seen. it is provided free to us and is updated within days of new updates, by a fellow forum member who does it for nothing..
instead of whinging and whining about the manual in at least two threads, why don't you record some music instead?

I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting email notifications of this thread if I have no posts in it (and didn't purposely subscribe to it).
Unless I did post in it and the post was deleted - though I can't think of a reason why that would happen.
Thread Tools at the bottom has a link "Subscribe to thread", but my User CP says I am already subscribed.

First: the manual appears updated immediately with the new download. Nicholas is that good!
And second: yes, it's unbelievable that somebody has so much time too much to spend at least two threads whining about this subject. But I am in doubt whether the world would be better off with the music this person could have made instead.....

And written by an Aussie!
(FWIW in my early days with Reaper when I first saw that the manual was written by someone called Geoffrey Francis I thought it was just a co-incidence - years earlier I often used to cross paths with Geoff Francis at musical sessions around Sydney. Couldn't be the same person could it? Geoff later moved to Tasmania.
As I became more familiar with this forum I discovered that nicholas in Van Diemen's Land is the Geoffrey Francis who writes the manual and the penny dropped - there is only one Geoffrey Francis!
For those outside Australia, Van Diemen's Land is an old name for Tasmania, Australia's South Island.)

Resurrecting an old thread here, sorry. But...
In the latest version of the User Guide, v.5.977, the ToC links (those on pages 3-13) are not clickable for me. I have tried Acrobat 9 Pro, Xodo PDF Reader for W10, Firefox, Chrome.
The links on page 14 are clickable though, except for Acrobat 9 Pro. Maybe that one is just too old, and it tells me that "You are viewing this document in PDF/A mode" (I have no idea what that means).
I guess there was no resolution to this strangeness, that some links work while the ToC-links do not. Or?

Thanks for posting. This seems to happen with some releases although for the life of me I can't figure out why! Apologies for the inconvenience.
It's quite late into the evening here, and recompiling the document is quite a lengthy job! I'll try again tomorrow and upload a fresh version if I have any success.
Meanwhile, you should be able to use the equivalent links from the bookmarks panel on left side of screen.

Sure, it is not a big thing. I just wanted to mention it.
Thanks for all your work on the User Guide. Every time I look into it I find something I didn't know before. Great job!
