Default Simultaneous use of youtube and reaper

Hello,

I would like to use my web browser to play youtube videos and Reaper at the same time, I need it to follow video tutorials. If I click on my web browser (Microsoft Edge) and move to Reaper, audio drops out from the webpage and the video freezes. Audio still works in Reaper.

I currently have set up my audio output for windows 11 to my audio interface.
Reaper is using the ASIO driver from the audio interface to process sound.

Is there a way around this so I can do both? What I would like to do is have Reaper control the ASIO driver, while the web browser uses another audio driver, but maintaining both audio signals coming through my monitor speakers.

Thank you,

Set your OS audio to the same sample rate as your Reaper project.

The browser sends a new sample rate request to the audio system when you click on it. If it's different that the last app to do so (Reaper), the last app gets disconnected. (Or read all that vice verse.)

There is a setings for an audio device in Windows, Speaker Properties, Advanced tab: "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".

I'm not sure if it is gonna help but try it out.

I searched a lot, found no way to do this, not even choosing different audio drivers on reaper settings (Win 11)

I doubt Windows allows to use 2 audio devices simultaneously. Maybe possible on macos, but rather not.

FWIW, just using win 10 and not my Focusrite interface, Direct Sound and WASAPI work OK. As you're experimenting make sure to reload the youtube page when you make an audio device change.

How do you access this setting on windows 11?

In REAPER Preferences -> Audio -> Device, I have the requested sample rate 44100

In Windows Settings -> System -> Sound -> All Sound Devices -> Properties, I have the requested sample rate for the Speakers (output) as 44100, 24 bit

I am not sure how I should check for REAPER bitrate or if I need to.

Now I just tried it and the REAPER audio works but the Youtube video is white screen and loading, no audio.

Sometimes it'll be the opposite with reaper audio not working and youtube working

So here's what you can try to solve this issue:

1. Download Voicemeeter (free), download the .exe file

2. In REAPER Preferences (ctrl + P), change the ASIO driver to Voicemeter Virtual ASIO (make sure you've selected ASIO as the audio system)

3. In Windows Settings, go to System -> Sound; under "Choose where to play sound" choose "VoiceMeeter Input (VB-Audio Voicemeeter VAIO)"

4. Scroll down in the System -> Sound (where you are in step 3) and press VoiceMeeter Output for "Choose a device for speaking or recording"

5. Press on the right arrow in step 4 and set this device as the default audio device

6. Go to windows search, search and open VoiceMeeter, and press Hardware Out in the top right corner, choose WDM: Speakers Realtek Audio

You should be able to input and hear sound with your MIDI device while also being able to hear your youtube tutorials at the same time!

Hey everybody I appreciate all your replies!
I will try all your options tomorrow. I'm working with a Steinberg Ur22mkii AI in windows 11 at the moment.

What I've found that works for me at the moment is selecting my AI as audio output in windows 11 sound settings and using WASAPI as audio system in Reaper. Granted, I'm not playing any audio in Reaper at the moment, but at least this way I can see a video on youtube and change settings and options on Reaper at the same time.

In my Windows 11 machine I can hear Reaper audio and Youtube videos no problem and I didn't do anything special. My settings in Reaper's audio device section are:
AUDIO SYSTEM: Direct Sound or Wave Out (both work). Have a look at attached image.

It won't work using ASIO4all. Limitation of the driver.

Exactly. ASIO4all provides a Direct connection to the analog output. it does so by blocking all other audio sources of other windows apps. this has some major upsides with Performance though.

---------------------------------------------------------

Solution (that i use all the time) :-

Download a separate ASIO Driver. The one that I have been using for years is FL Studio ASIO
Download and install it from the drive link that i have provided and then
in Preferences>Audio>Device, set the 'Audio System' to "ASIO" then 'ASIO Driver' to "FL Studio ASIO"

Default Solved?

Ok, so there are several solutions. As you have commented ASIO was designed to use a connection exclusively with one application.

"...However, the basic idea behind ASIO is
that professional audio applications entirely take ownership of the ASIO device. Only very few ASIO drivers support true multiple application access..."

-Taken from Steinberg's webpage (https://forums.steinberg.net/t/pc-wi...teinberg/20479)

So,
A) Use either Direct Sound or WASAPI audio driver in Reaper, while retaining my windows 11 output as the Audio Interface.
B) Experimental proxy driver allowing for simultaneous use of ASIO driver between applications but it's unsupported and old. https://forums.steinberg.net/t/pc-wi...teinberg/20479
C) The Voicemeter digital audio mixer as some others have said.

Easiest is option A.

Setting the same sampling rate and such, in both Reaper and Windows11 had no effect, but I appreciate the suggestion.

Thank you!

I use Windows 11.
I don't use ASIO.
Just use WASAPI in shared mode.

Reaper and YouTube at same time are fine.

ASIO is compatible with virtually all audio software and theoretically has lower latencies when using a Audio Interface and some minor benefits to overall performance.

on the other hand WASAPI is a modern system designed by Microsoft. both are good.

But in this case you are using ASIO with one application.....and Windows audio with the other. It's 100% possible and with your interface and driver it should work with the correct settings.
Did you make sure to set both recording and playback sample rates?
Did you also uncheck the allow applications to take exclusive control of this device box?

WASAPI is a perfectly good workaround though as long as you find it's performance is good on your system.
