Applying MIDI CC to active channel?

Don't know how to phrase this so I'll just describe my situation and what I'm trying to achieve:

I have a MIDI controller and I want to control identical compressors on different channels using the same knobs. I'm thinking of prioritizing control to the active channel. Is there a way to do this in Reaper natively or non-natively? (I think Softube Console 1 does something similar but not sure)

I think that by "channel" you mean a Reaper track. If so then, in the MIDI Learn dialogue, you can specify that the target is controlled only when the track is selected. Then you can select another track and the controller will control that one.

Ooooh, thank you! That's exactly what I wanted. Is there a way to automate the assignments? Or does copying a plugin and pasting into another track also copy its MIDI assignments?
