Sommartid (Summertime)
I found this old recording, sounded a little dull and weak. I put a little eq and a limiter on it. What do you think?

Nice tune. Listen through my smartphone, so....
The guitar on the left sounded harsh and compressed.

I like the song, performance and arrangement. You mentioned that you EQ'd an older dull sounding track... You may have overshot... it's too hot in the upper mids for me.

Msundh, yes, that guitar is overcompressed, my first though too. But I only got the stereo file, no chance to undo it.
Timothy, that was the area I boosted. An improvement to my ears. Suppose I can boost a little less. I used Voxengo's overtone eq, which I like very much.
I mix/master in cans these days. Might have to do with it.
On another note, I've noticed that some newer releases are really smashed in the mastering, with lots of distortion. Especially guitar music -- hip-hop and R'n'B sounds much cleaner and punchy to me. EMD too.

really like this Jorgen!! i'll second a few other comments there's just a general over-compression going on - making everything sound a little harsh, esp highs. if you pull back on that, let it breathe more - this will be amazing!!

I somehow missed bookmarking this and just now caught up, awesome song, I agree with the other comments that it will sound great by dialling back some compression. There's a touch of Sultans of Swing about it imo which is no bad thing, it sounds excellent.

Hey guys, haven't checked in for a while. Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. I only have the stereo file, so there's only so much I can do about it. I agree about the highs and the compression, I see what I can do. It's already on I-tunes though... probably doesn't sell anyway.

Is all the compression happening in the mix? If not, I can give a shot at mastering it. Thats if the mix itself sound decent of course.

Jorgen, I'd love to hear the original .wav file without any processing and to have a go at working on it.
Anyone else feel the same?
Yep. OK. Take a number.

Alright! I'll go look for that file, get back to you.
Well, here it is: https://soundcloud.com/jorgensandber...rtidjan06vers2
I guess I did this in Logic, and the levels seem pretty high, must have done some kind of mastering back then - compression and limiting on the stereobus. Don't know if there's anything you can do about it.
What I did the other week in Reaper was to slam it a bit more and bump the highs. Sounded good then. You know what it's like. You listen back later and wonder what you were doing.
edit: Also found a vocal up version: https://soundcloud.com/jorgensandber...jan06-vocal-up

Well, most probably I had a comp and a limiter on the stereobus when I did the mixdown, maybe an eq too. That's how I usually do it. If that's "mastering", well, that's another question. This was years ago, so I don't really remember. What I did the other week was to import the file in Reaper and eq'd and limited some more... and went overboard with it.

Those files are public, so you should be able to download them without problems. There are these boxes below the comment section... one says ---More. Maybe have a look there? I think Soundcloud has done a few changes, I remember having seen a download symbol before, but it's not visible now... probably you have to click that box.
If that doesn't work, I'll think of something else, Dropbox perhaps.

Totally understand. I myself wanted to take a shot just to better my skills. I rarely get the chance to work on anything that's not electronic heavy.
And yes the three dots is what you have to click in order to download the track.

Probably just me but I'm still not able to download. I've turned off all NoScript and Adblock functions and checked out all the menu possibilities I can find ont he soundcloud page. I'm seeing:
Jorgen, if it's not too much trouble perhaps you could put the two files on dropbox or similar.?

The various processing I'm trying out on it brings out aspects of the track, especially the vocal and guitars, that remind me that recording quality is always, really, about the initial performance more than anything else. It's a pleasure.
I'll post it when I'm done. I like a mellow tone, so be forewarned, heh.

Here's my version. My goals were to emphasize the vocal and acoustic guitar, which to me were the greatest strengths of the recording, keeping the excellent rhythmic highlights of the elec gtr on the left but minimizing its quite bright and compressed tone; and also to not ruin the sound of the bass, drums, etc., while doing that. Any comments appreciated.

I see... interesting. I didn't know you could do that to a single stereo file. Is this mid-side processing? Overall, the sound is soft and mellow, as you said. Nice job. The electric may be a bit too low to my taste, but I understand your thinking. So, big thanks. Always exciting when other people have a go at your stuff.

Thanks, Jorgen. I did use mid-side processing to balance it after I did the L side EQ. Here's a render with the left elec gtr a couple dB higher.
http://www.timothylawler.com/bbs/Jor...meLgtrupTL.mp3
I tried it higher still but it started sounding harsh to me.
Edit: Jorgen, did you play the guitar parts? If so, that left elec gtr could be easily replaced in the stereo file, given that it was panned hard left. I'd love to mix that in and create the perfect (to my ear) version of this. Well, the perfect mellow version anyway.

Timothy, that sounds interesting, do whatever you like to do. Yes, it's me playing the guitars. And I would like to put it up on Soundcloud. Got a wav-file?

Jorgen, here are the wav files:
http://www.timothylawler.com/bbs/JorgenSummertimeTL.wav
Same as above but with the left guitar raised 2dB:
http://www.timothylawler.com/bbs/Jor...meLgtrupTL.wav
What I did:
- used PLPar EQ in linear phase mode to cut the highs on the left side elec gtr
- did a slight de-essing of the vocal with Spitfish.
- a touch of Ferox because I liked how it smoothed the mix.
- Spline EQ to balance the bass gtr after that
- Flux Bittersweet in slow mode to add a touch more articulation to the less-bright layers in the mix. It was subtle.
- Stillwell sterowidth plug to balance the stereo soundstage after the left side high cuts with PLPar
- Elephant to adjust the final level (without any gain reduction) and protect from any overs.
About re-recording the left electric guitar, if you're so inclined to record a replacement rhythm guitar part and send me a link I'd be more than happy to adjust my processed version and mix the guitar in.

Thanks, Timothy. I can't re-record anything right now since my electric is at the pawn shop.
