Tascam US428 control surface
Hi, I've seen people talking about using tascam sufaces in reaper. How do I do this with my US428? Its about the only feature I miss from other DAWS. thanks.

I would also be interested in reaper+us 428 control surface. That would count me in.

My Tascam firewire interface works with reaper.
You might as well just download it and give it a try. To set as the audio interface go to options -> preferences -> audio device and select the driver for you tascam.
Then options -> preferences -> control surface and select the tascam there.
Good luck

yes the audio interface of the tascam works fine, as you would expect from the ASIO driver. I'm looking forward to the day I can use the control surface features. any idea when of if that will happen?
cheers.

Justin,
the closest I think we can get is the midi implimentation from thje manual (appendix b): http://finearts.uvic.ca/visualarts/m...scam428_V3.pdf
could be useful as I think its standard across the us range..
cheers.

It does have some sort of makie emulation. Heres the 4 modes it can bet set too according to the Tascam Manual.
Mackie Control (Sonar)
Mackie Control (Digital Performer)
Mackie Control (Logic)
Native Mode
You'll have probably read it by the time you see this, but i sent you a PM about loaning you mine, since were both in The Bay. Let me know

Is it possible to get 4 channels in at once?
Tascam touted the unit as being able to record 4 channels at once. So far, I do not see how to enable this in Reaper.
This US-429 dll is the best! I have been waiting for a coupld of years for something like this to happen. I would have done it myself if I had the appropriate coding skills, though I'm tempted to load up the source and see what I can learn.

I think it has something to do with selected ASIO driver - the 16-bit version is 4-channel, the 24-bit one is 2-channel, due to limited bandwidth of USB 1.1.

More fixes are on the way, I just need to pick a good moment to get back to it. It needs to be optimized to avoid unnecessary status updates - would come handy when Reaper attempts to delete 32 tracks at once

DLL Installation
I'll be dipped in dog doo if I can figure this DLL installation out.
1) Vista 32 SP2
2) Reaper v3.161 (32 bit obviously)
3) 3.4.0 Tascam Drivers
4) Put Reaper_us428.dll in the PlugIn directory
5) In Preferences in the MIDI Devices section I have all devices set to <disabled>
6) I select the US-428 in the Control Surface drop down and I get the "Control Surface: Error opening MIDI input(s) and output(s)
I know the US-428 is working...it all works okey dokey in Cubase LE1.
Damn.

More
I should also add that I do get the "fader controls panning" thing when adding the 428 as a HUI. That, at least, confirms that messages are making it into the OS.
It really just seems like the US-428 dll is not "auto finding" the "US-428 Control" midi devices...and I cannot set it manually like in the Reaper native dll control surface selections.
Or I'm just missing the obvious.

Control surface - recompiled dll working for 64bit OS
Hi,
a bit late ... agreed. So probably no one uses the oldie but goldie ... except for my son, who set the tascam back into working mode last month.
I recompiled kfoltman's code and it works like a charm on my box (Win8.1 64Bit). If you need a copy, just send me a PN. Unfortunately I do not have a permanent webserver available to make a download available for everyone. So in case you have one, I can send the dll.
Some install details:
- do proper cabling (power, USB)
- install latest driver for us428 (I use version 3.40f)
- install ASIO4all latest version (optional, not really required)
- copy reaper_us428-x64.dll to plugins-folder of Reaper (X64) installation folder
- Power up the tascam device
- Start reaper
- Manage settings:
-- Preferences->Audio->Device (refer to picture):
Audio System: ASIO
ASIO driver: ASIO US-428 (24 bit)
Enable Inputs: checked
first: US428A
last: US428D
Output range:
first: 1: US428 L
last: 2: US428 R
Request Sample Rate: checked, value. 48000
Click "ASIO Configuration" (refer to picture):
Protocol: US-428 Native
Master fader sends MIDI only
At Startup Recall: Last settings
Snapshots: Click Save, Select 1
Select "Close"
Click "Ok"
-- Preferences->Audio->MIDI Devices (refer to picture):
MIDI input: disable US-428 Control (uncheck "Enable Input ...")
MIDI output: disable US-428 Control (uncheck "Enable Input ...")
-- Preferences->Control/OSC/Web (refer to picture):
Click "Add" box, select "Tascam US-428 (native) v0.8" from dropdown
-- Click "OK"

Works on Windows 10
Tried this on Windows 10 (x64) and Reaper 6.46 (x64).
The volume, mute and the progress dial and playback buttons work as expected.
I'd really appreciate if someone could share the source code for the Reaper plugin (apparently the original files' sites don't exist anymore) to try and build it for ARM64.
Also, I really wish there was a way to make the US-428 work on modern macOS computers.
Update:
It actually works on Windows 11 (x64), but the experience has been buggy.
It crashed the computer when clicking 'Close' in the Control Panel driver window.

Hello Zackbum,
I have recently acquired a US-428 hoping to use it as a control surface within Reaper 64. I have followed your instructions but still cannot get the US-428 to communicate with Reaper. My settings are as follows:
Driver for US-428 (3.40f) installed in Reaper plugins folder.
reaper_us428-x64.dll installed in Reaper plugins folder.
TASCAM US-428 (Native) v0.8 shows up in Control Surface Settings.
ASIO US-428 (24bit) is not available in Audio device settings.
US-428 is not showing in MIDI device settings.
On loading Reaper the following message appears - Control Surface: Error opening MIDI inputs and outputs.
How do I access the Tascam Control Panel as shown in the picture?
Any help will be welcome.
Thank you,
Keith
Windows 10, Reaper 6.69.
