One Small Step
This work (link below) uses audio from the Apollo 11 space mission and samples of a Roland TR505 drum machine. Instruments used are TimeMachine JSFX sampler, ReaRack JSFX modular synth and Surge.

ReaVerb, just using the reverb generator method.

Wow, sounds quite good as a room for Roland TR-505. Great.

The very beginning sounds bad (the apollo sample). Some freqs that's very disturbing.
After that is fine.

msundh, The original Apollo recording is very poor. I agree, there are some annoying sounds at about 1kHz, but when I try to remove them using EQ (ReaFir), I feel that I loose too much of the voice. I can remove most of the audible noise with a noise gate, but musically I preferred the continuous noise drone rather than chopped vocals. Perhaps I could use the noise gate and then add back in some less annoying noise?

Cant you do both? have a blend of one gated with another not gated but at lower level, maybe side chained?

I tried a couple of things. I ended up side chaining the output gain of ReaFir to the audio signal and then added in a synthesised rocket launch sound to blend it all together.
The new version is here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OFy...ew?usp=sharing

I find it worse. The voice is lower, the background noise is louder.

I decided to stick with the original version. In either case, launching a Saturn V rocket is a noisy affair, it's part of the story.

Nicely done.
Are you influenced by these guys at all?

They are known to use REAPER in the production process btw!

Time Waster: Cool tune, cool concept! To "de-harsh" the original Apollo 11 clips, you might need to go into it with an automated EQ. set up two or three filters to catch the most annoying frequencies (as narrow a Q as possible!), and then just automate the filter levels syllable-by-syllable. Just depends on how much time you want to waste on it... (See what I did there?!!) The rest of the track really does sound good.

Why you did not use RS5k, what is the advantage of JSFX sampler?

The answer is simple, because RS5k does not have 16 stereo outputs

Thanks SoundGuyDave. I'm really not bothered by the harsh bits myself. I like the juxtaposition with the rest of the sounds.

That, and the fact that I wrote the code, so I really should use it.

Sweet, those drum samples make it sound a bit Cabaret Voltaire.
(and yeah PSB is rather good, I've seen them live and they had a dancing cosmonaut guy while playing "Gagarin")

Has a quaint old timey charm though, especially with reverbed kick.

one man's quaint old timey charm is another man's characterless blandness, that's the beauty of sonics and opinions i guess.
(and just to clarify i was purely commenting on the TR505, not the track)

The TR505 was marketed as a drum computer, with the focus on patterning capability. The sounds were just samples of other Roland drum machines AFAIK.
I think the kick drum sound of the TR505 is OK. The other sounds do leave a bit to be desired. The open high hat doesn't even have a complete tail.
At the time, the 505 was a step up from my first drum machine, the TR606, which had a truly woeful kick drum sound. Of course, we wanted the drum machine to sound like real drums and it wasn't until later that the rap artists began to exploit the tacky sounds of the 606 in new ways, by which time I had sold mine.

I had a listen to Public Service Broadcast. I might have inadvertently ripped them off! Maybe it's a genre, "Vocaphobe", bands where no-one wants to do the singing.

yeah, kind of like the greatest hits (excuse the pun ) of the 707 & the 727 - it was brilliant at the time, just hasn't aged as well as the 606, 808 or 909

It's the synthwave era, cheezy digital tones are in now. I have a feeling my Yamaha RX8 will by worth actual money soon!

All is fine. Reaper's RS5k is versatile sampler with its own limits for sure (can be workaround using multiple instances and all routings, parameter modulations, feature requests are welcomed of course), Time Waster's TimeMachine JSFX is wonderful JS Effect, I tried and used it as first here I think and Roland TR-505 is nice little drummachine with fair set of drumsamples of that era, kick is really nice, snare punchy and short, when programming with accents it has nice groove. Limitation is stereo out only, but it looks very nice and sexy , I like its design more than multioutput capable TR-626, which shares the same design line, but to me TR-505 looks way better with its location of the display above rather than on side next to main sample buttons. TR-707 is a different beast with it full XoX matrix display, yeah.

I like the "experimental" drums. Very creative work!
