Seems odd that the cheap interface I just gave to someone I didn't like came with Guitar Rig and after blowin' high dough on the Scarlett and registering it , all I got was a chance to win a ....PIANO ?
Tried plugging an FX pedal and it was incredibly noisy ?

the XLN Piano that is free with Focusrite registration is a nice high quality instrument. It may not be what you need right now, but is definitely worth having.
Maybe the other interface came with Guitar Rig player that is free software anyhow. There is no way a $10 interface legally bundles a full version of Guitar Rig.
https://www.native-instruments.com/e...ayer/download/
But it's not so clear after the Guitar rig and pedal comment if you actually are looking for a guitar vst instrument or whether you really mean an amp sim to play guitar through.
If it's the latter there are some OK free options.

Some are more easy to install than others.
Here some that contains only one .dll file you have to put in your vst folder and make reaper find them by re-scanning this folder.
Akoustik Guitars
Both Acoustic and Nylon from DSK
The Front Bass
DVS Guitar, very warm..
...
Plenty of it. Maybe you didn't began by the easiest to install. Try those one from the same site and have fun.
Bye

I guess I'm still trying to come to grips with the "terms" .
I watched a few You Tube videos and it seems that I would be able to record my guitar over a drum track "clean" and then chose / apply the effects during playback ?
I'm looking to play my guitar > into the Focusrite > into the DAW and add distortion .
Is that what "Amp-sim" does ?
And by "Virtual Instrument" does this mean that the plug-in supplies the INSTRUMENT and the sound ?

You asked for a guitar VST like MT Power Drums. That makes all the drum noises for you, no real drums needed. So people thought you wanted a guitar VST that made guitar noises without a real guitar needed.
Distortion, compression, reverb etc are Effects (FX) that can be applied after a guitar has been recorded clean. You already have quite a few of those effects because they came free with Reaper. Click on the FX button on a track and look in the Cockos and JS folders. Trying all those out should keep you going for hours.
Amp and cab sims are particular effects you use to make your guitar sound like it's playing through specific amps and cabinets and they usually have built-in effects too. I'll let the guitarists recommend those but it may be worth looking at http://www.musictech.net/2016/10/best-freeware-guitar/

Hey Digger, if you are after FREE Amp sims that you can play your guitar through you can do worse than check out these:
My favourite free Amp is "Emissary". Everything from clean through to hi-gain.
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/emi...by-ignite-amps
If you are after hi-gain Amps any of the "LePou" Amps are quite good.
https://lepouplugins.blogspot.com.au/
If you use any of the above amps sims you will also need a Cab Impulse Response player. One of the best is the free "PULSE IR"
https://producerbundle.com/product-c...audio-plugins/
There are a multitude of Cab IR's on the net to use with the PULSE IR. Google is your friend here.
Hope that this is of some use.

Yeah, those XLN pianos are great.
Digger, when you get around to having a MIDI keyboard (and you'd be mad not to) you'll be glad you have it
And Digger, the Guitar Rig Player that came with that cheap thing was only version 2 (I remember the screenshot in your other thread) and like Stella645 says you can download the latest free version 5 anyway...but all designed to suck you into buying the full Guitar Rig which you really don't want to do at this point anyway....there are heaps of free Guitar Amps and FX available.. get the feel of it all before buying anything like that. A really nice free un-complicated amp is AXP SoftAmp FM25....perfect to get started with, un-complicated but superb.
