Default Importing SMF Files

Hello all, I am not yet a Reaper user but I am convinced it is the right tool for me. I have an older workstation running XP SP3 and have stayed with it as some of my hardware never had drivers written for Windows 7 or 10. I saw that Gibson was discontinuing the Sonar line, I have been using older versions of Cakewalk since 1995. I have a lot of work saved as project files I want to bring with me when I convert to a new sequencer platform.

Does Reaper have a utility that would allow me to import the project files if I were to save them as Standard format 1 MIDI files? I will not be bringing any audio tracks over as I record audio on a digital recorder that is synced up with the sequencer.

I am assuming that Reaper has a method for sync via MTC. Is this correct?

My plan is to install Reaper on the XP workstation, import all of the files to Reaper I want to keep... saving them as Reaper projects, and then eventually converting the workstation to Windows 10. I will then look for some modern hardware.

I am an old school writer but am fairly proficient with technology. I would really appreciate any advice, comments, or warnings you users out there can offer.

Yes, you can import MIDI files. More info in the User Guide - chapter 4.8 Importing MIDI Files: https://www.reaper.fm/userguide.php

You can find info about this here: http://anthonymillerdesign.net/blog/reaper-ltcmtc-setup. And in the User Guide - chapter 23.6 Syncing to an External Device

As a side note:

You can evaluate Reaper and test things out without any feature limitations for 60 days. And if you prefer, there's also the option of doing a portable install (which puts all application and resource files into a single folder): http://lacinato.com/cm/blog/25-reaperportable

In addition to the User Guide, you can also find a bunch of useful info in the Videos Section: https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php
