Default Only two lanes for overlapping items (FIXED)

The Option "Show overlapping items in lanes" only uses 2 lanes here. See what happens when I move the pink clip.

Doesn't seem right to me. I can't see how to change it.

I think that this doesn't make sense too, but in the meantime 'Enable free positioning' works fine, just that it doesn't include height snapping)

Edit: it can snap items automatically with an action see more info at this thread:

you can't change it. that is a current limitation of the feature.
the closest you can get to the desired behaviour is FIPM mode, but then you will probably juggle a different trade off.

Is it a documented limitation? Isn't it a bug instead?

Thanks,
Mario

I don't think it's a bug...
I think it was a oversight, perhaps, when the feature was first implemented.

+1

more lanes will be great

I will like it much more than the free positioning that I use now.

Voted. Is it normal or expected that the items won't show in lanes if they overlap during recording? They are only shown as lanes if I drag them after recording.

The groundwork for this feature is already in place and ready for just the tiny bit of expansion that would make this feature really useful.

I'm a big fan of takes in REAPER, but for those that aren't, more than two lanes would allow them to bypass making takes and use lanes instead. It's a simple fix.

Free item positioning can be useful in a number of situation, but it's a mess. When moving items just a little bit, you can end up gaining unwanted crossfades or losing wanted ones. Free items don't make life simpler.

Many of my tracks, particularly my MIDI percussion tracks, use a bunch of different items to create the poly-rhythmic sound I'm going for. There are times when it's not useful to build a chorus using multiple tracks or 'play all takes' items.

There are other threads complaining about being able to select items in the background/foreground. I believe multiple lanes is the solution to all of these problems.
