Default smoother tap tempo averaging, please

Hi
It seems that Reaper's tap tempo is a bit too sensitive (I have the impression it uses just the last two taps with no averaging or anything)?

Other DAW i know try to find an approximation of the last 4 taps (or something like that) in order to find the best value, and with Reaper tapping tempo can give some huge tempo amplitude differences.

Wouldn't a smoother averaging behaviour better and suiting more real life usages ?

I agree, maybe let's wait the number of beats per measure as indicated by the current timesig before averaging.

I don't use the one in Reaper. I rolled my own tap tempo app with an averaging option that works off the space bar a few years ago that does just that. It doesn't even give a value until 8 taps in then keeps a running average of the previous 8. You have to be careful though because a few bad hits muck up the averaging and you have to wait till the average catches back up if that makes sense.

Thank you for your reply.

mmhhh... interesting.
Is your plugin a VST or a standalone application ?
I used the IPZ AUdio to CC, linked to MiditoReacontrolpath to get some results, but any little change in the trigger/tap makes Reaper tempo change too much.
it seems that among your tool and IPZ AUdio to CC, several workarounds are nearly there, but i wish a native solution could be found in order to synchronize Reaper with non-midi external devices.

Hi,

The devs should look at how Logic has always handled this...with a user defined smoothing parameter, user defined max rate of change..etc. but plz plz dont make it less sensitive, because in the situation where Reaper could eventually record a tempo map, say from an ext source..say my old Aphex Studio Clock which i use to use Live to have my MPC60 sequencer follow my drum playing ...^^ full tempo resolution would be preferred. i hope I made myself understandable..^^

Yes, that is what i want to do too (having an old, pre-midi analogue drum machine sending a trigger signal to Reaper, which will then make both hardware midi synths play along synced with the drum machines being the master clock, and record the separate audio tracks in real time.
THe key being "machines playing together in sync", and "in real time"

It's standalone which is really how I wanted it. So I can use it anywhere/anytime. It's on my desktop taskbar for instant access, and if I need the tempo in a DAW, I just type it in. The averaging can be enabled/disabled.
