Why do you need such a long attack time...? Usually people look for compressors to have quite short attack times, so that the compressor actually ends up compressing the peaks...

i'm learning the functions of attack and release...

500ms is too short! for release its about 5000 which is ok

i need to make some comparisons so want one which has also 5000ms attack (or 3000 or something, just not 500)

and maybe i have a synth that plays looooooooong notes, maybe i want the compressor to lower it after 3 seconds

Doesn't your synthesizer have an appropriate volume envelope?

The compressor always starts compressing right away; "attack" measures how long it takes for the compressor to reach (IIRC) 2/3 of the maximum as determined by your ratio and threshold.

Yes, this works ... load up JS Digital Versatile Compressor v.2 (LOSER) and plug 5000 into the attack field, and you'll get a nearly 5 second attack, (actually more like 3 seconds, give or take), but that should be enough to *hear* the effects of attack within a compressor. Additionally, the slider can be modified to give a full 5 second attack by editing the JS script with a 5000 in the attack parameter.

you can enter a value of 31556952000 in the Release[ms] Field
of this Digital Versatile Compressor v2 [LOSER] compressor and you
get the release to one year.

i wish i could wait that long.

This might be just right for tracks my drummer makes when he is wasted.

My JS LT_Comp (in the Stash) was deliberately built to be like ReaComp, but with longer maximum Precomp. You could hack that if you want. It also will send a "Control Voltage" out on a pair of channels that you could record to another track or something and actually see how the gain reduction changes over time.
