Default Just installed the 10.13.2 update (from 10.13.1)

Don't!

Unless you feel like rolling back to 10.13.1 anyway...
Or something earlier and more stable.

For crying out loud can you explain why..., my iMac runs perfect at the moment on 10.13.2.

Same here : experiencing no problems at all after updating to 10.13.2.
However, i did the combo update:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1944?locale=en_US

Always way better/safer to do a combo update than an incremental update via Appstore.

Yeah, it was operator error!

I have multiple systems on partitions on a single SSD in my laptop. So I ended up forcing 10.13 to install into an HFS+ volume instead of the new APFS format. So almost certainly fallout from that. Oops.

I need to figure out the best practice for dueling systems that want different volume formats.
