Default Record Arpeggiator Midi Output in Piano Roll

I want to record an arpeggiator's midi output into the piano roll in Reaper.
Any tips or tutorials on this?
I need the actual notes of the arpeggiator, not the held note(s) on the keyboard.

You need to select "Record Midi Output"
Right click on the input button on the Track Control Panel.

that is quite easy to achieve.
I attached a screenshot. I used the JS midi arp as an Arpeggiator that is included in Reaper for this purpose.
(You didn't mention if you use a software Arp or a hardware arp).
I was playing the Arpeggiator in this example with my Midikeyboard.

- arm a track
- make sure it receives the Midi Input from your Midikeyboard (or whatever you are using)
- right-click the field where in my picture it say "Midi: Midi Keyboard...."
- go to "record: output" and choose the option "Record Output (midi)"
- record and play a note (or several ones, whatever you wanna play...) on the midikeyboard

that's it

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to reply.

one more thing.

you don't have to play the arpeggiator "live" with a Keyboard.
you can also first just record the normal midi signal. (the simple long notes you play on your keyboard) to a midi file in the reaper track, then edit it to your liking.
(You can already use the arpeggiator during this process. you will hear what it play but until you record the midi out, you will only record the notes you actually play on your keyboard.)

then you perform the option to record the midi output like mentioned above.

then when you record, the arpeggiator get its signal from the midi file you record, play the arpeggiated sequence and you record the arpeggiated midi notes to a second take in your track.

(I hope that was understandable, my english is not that good)

Thanks for follow-up info. Your English is fine.
I use FL Studio mostly, so Reaper is foreign to me.
FL (as far as I know) can't capture actual arpeggiator midi output.
I was thinking I might use Reaper as Rewire device/vsti in FL so I can use this function.
I want to learn Reaper, though.

If I am not mistaken you can load FL Studio as a VST Plugin inside of Reaper, btw
I think I remember doing so in Reaper 2 with FL Studio 6. Never used FL Studio much, though.

Yes, FL will load as vsti in Reaper.

For some reason it does not work here... can you help me? Thanks in advance!
Here is the video of the steps I did and the result that there is no midi recorded.

If I remember correctly, the plugin you are using has to output midi as well as audio in order to get arpeggiated notes.

Thanks for the reply. I tried the way it was mentioned above (JS arp) but it did not work either so I'm assuming it's not the issue with FM8...

I don't think FM8 outputs the built-in arpeggiator's MIDI data, but uses it only internally, so you won't be able to record any MIDI from FM8's output.

A step is missing in the screencap: When recording, data which is already existing on the track is not played by default (as you won't normally want that). In this case you need to tick "Monitor track media when recording" in the track's monitor/record context menu. It still won't work with FM8, but should with eg the JS or other MIDI arpeggiators (which actually output the arpeggiated note data).

This step is only necessary when you are dealing with notes which are already recorded in an item (like in your screencap), not when playing the arpeggiator live.

Hi,

Thank you for this very clear explaination... but it does not work here :-(
I created a simple midi note in one track, and it's this midi arpeggiated output I want to record.
Do I have to create another track, or the midi arpeggiated notes will be part of the original track as a nex take ?
Any idea why it doesn't work ?

This is strange: the midi output of track A with a single arpeggiator FX feeds the midi input of track B with a single VstI output: as a result I can hear the arpeggiated sound. Midi activity on track A is visible (no midi activity on track B).

This is the answer I was looking for! Thanks posters!

I'm using arp4midi (rurik leffanta) into TAL noisemaker. The Track has some basic chords I drew into the piano roll.

Had to both: Record > Output(MIDI) [right click below the Record Arm light]
and Monitor track media when recording [right click the little speaker next to the Record selector]

Now.. helps to just Record mode: time selection auto-punch [right click on master record arm light/transport]

THEN.. this made a second take on the same track. Right Click on the MIDI item > Take > Explode...

Then... don't forget to turn off your arpegiator if using the same track

Thanks again ya'all.

If you've already got the original MIDI recorded, Apply Track FX as New Take (MIDI output) is less steps than switching both monitoring and record mode. It's usually a lot faster too, since it doesn't have to play through in real time.
