Default EuCon alpha now available

[EDIT]:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, it's available here:
https://stash.reaper.fm/tag/Extension-Plug-ins
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been developing EuCon suppport on behalf of Justin and the rest of the good folks at Cockos.

It's almost time to start the testing / feedback process.

I have no Mac development environment currently, so for the alpha testing we'll start out Windows only.

CAUTION -- There have been BSOD's (developers are notoriously hard on things, and the EuCon drivers get in pretty deep), so DO NOT use this anywhere but a test environment.

If interested, please post to this thread including:

Hardware setup -- incuding audio / video / computer / EuCon
OS info
Plugin info -- e.g. "I use the Reaper plugins, plus Scott Stillwell's stuff", "I use Nebula exclusively", "I use a lot of VSTi's", "I use UAD", etc.
Typical project size - only include ones that you are willing to subject to this torture test

EuCon experience level -- EuCon has its own set of challenges when it comes to DHCP / caching, etc. The goal here is to get EuCon owners who are regularly using EuCon with another DAW. This will help us keep EuCon and Reaper issues isolated from each other.

The goal of the alpha phase is to test the very simplest things at a primitive level -- e.g. can you easily download and install the software?, does it crash immediately?, those sorts of things

I don't have any EuCon devices, but I do want to say thank you for contribution to Reaper.

I know it's not a helpful comment, but if I had the cash for an Artist Control/Mix at this point, I would be SO all over this...

That being said, when I DO have said cash, see above.

Geoff,

U R da man... and thank you Cockos for finally taking surface controller support seriously.

Just be careful you alpha testers and be sure to not blow up anything.

I've sent word through a few industry mailing lists to join the fray. In this case GameAudioPro, SoundDesign and SoundDesignGermany.

Cool, thanks.

Probably within the week we'll have an alpha build.

Do you run other DAWs with the Mix/Control ?

Geoff,

I have two Artist mix and an Artist transport, I sold my control as I hated the screen and now use an ipad with cubase ic pro or lemur.

I have Cubase 7, Nuendo 6 and pro tools 9 HD. I have the pro tools rig on a mac and cubase/Nuendo on a PC, they're all networked so the euphonix work on either platform.

I'm happy to help if I can however I'm very bust at the studio at the moment with projects so don't now how much time I could commit.

OK, it's available here:
https://stash.reaper.fm/tag/Extension-Plug-ins

EuCon Alpha.zip

I'm not giving out much operational info on purpose at first, want to see how intuitive - or unintuitive it is

Alpha test instructions:

Place the correct DLL (32 or 64 bit) in the Reaper install directory, Plugins subdirectory
e.g. C:\Program Files\Reaper 4 (x64)\Plugins

You should see reaper_csurf.dll, that tells you you're in the right folder.

Load a small project.

Go to Options->Preferences->Control Surfaces and press the Add button.

Select EuCon from the dropdown and press OK to dismiss the dialog.

Press Apply and OK to dismiss the dialog.

IMPORTANT: Press the space bar and wait until the cursor begins to move -- this delay is EuCon initialing.

Exit the app (do not save).

Next time you open the app, EuCon should be operational.

Known issues:

If you add or remove sends, receives, plugins, etc. EuCon is not updated, you must exit and restart to see the changes.

About a million other things that are mostly finished / half finished / half designed / not started / not even thought of -- that's
where you come in

Sent you an email with more details and responses to your list above. I'm a Mac use, but am really excited to see this coming together! Happy to offer testing whenever that's ready.

My systems includes an MC Control and two MC Mixes among other things.

Thanks for all your hard work and efforts on this!

I'll bring one of the units from the studio, home, and test it on my personal W7 system...
Can't mess with the Windows machine at the studio :/

So frickin' glad this is happening. Geoff I cannot thank you enough. I downloaded the alpha plugin this afternoon and took it for a test drive before I left the studio using a Windows 7 system with 64 bit Reaper and an MC Mix. It's one of the older pre-Avid units.

I created a small dummy session to start with; 8 tracks, no FX, no media, and no routing aside from the Master track. Installation was a breeze and the controller started working as soon as I selected Eucon in the preferences and hit play in my project. I didn't even need to restart like you indicated in your instructions, though I did anyways for good measure.

All the basic functions worked. I was able to write volume and pan automation, solo and mute tracks, record arm tracks, select tracks, and switch automation modes. Flip mode worked as expected, as did nudging through tracks on the controller. The OLED display on the controller displayed all my track names and parameter values correctly. Didn't have a chance to test out any sends or FX yet.

After I was through monkeying around with my dummy session I loaded up a relatively modest post-production project and it crashed immediately. A little disappointing, but obviously that's to be expected with such an early build. The project had about 40ish tracks and probably a hundred or so different media files, all heavily edited in the timeline.

I had to run to meet a friend for dinner, so I didn't have much time to test things after the crash, but I should have some time Sunday or Monday evening to really put it through it paces. Let me know if there's anything specific you'd like for me to try out.

I'm really excited to see this thing develop, and can't wait to be able to start using Eucon on real projects. Don't wanna get my hopes up too much, but it would be awesome if the Eucon development could coincide with an overhaul of Reaper's automation features. The Eucon controllers are great, but their use as a mixing tool is still going to be somewhat limited until Reaper gains some more advanced automation features

Basics working ok. Not bad. And flip faders to boot. I can't wait to actually have a unit to try this on...when I manage to scrape one from a buddy or weekend-tryout from a shop.

Let me know if there's anything specific you'd like for me to try out
General:

Select Pan:
If you are set up for stereo pan/width:
Pushing the upper switch (the one that lights up yellow) should change the rotary and display to width adjust / readout.
Pushing the lower switch (the one that lights up green) should reverse the pan L/R.

Select Input (Shift Inserts/Input):
The rotary should control Gain -- not implemented in Reaper yet -- but you should see the readout change
Pushing the upper switch should put the rotary into input monitor select mode (off, on, auto, on+existing, auto+existing)
Pushing the lower switch should reverse phase (polarity)
Pushing the page switch should put the rotary into input select mode

Select Aux:
The rotary should control level
The upper switch should toggle between pre/post fader
The lower switch should control mute
Pressing the knob top switch should put you into Pan / Phase mode

Similarly, try Mix (hardware outputs) and Group (receives)

Experiment with Inserts and see what you get.

If you have an Artist control check out the softkey mappings, all Reaper Actions present at startup should be assignable -- 4400 plus on my box with SWS installed

Do you use UAD plugins?
If so, I have something you can test specifically.

That's a start.

Geoff,

Based on the EuCon users that I know, I think that when a Mac version is available for testing, you'll have no shortage of volunteers.

Yep, I actually already discovered this when I was toying around yesterday. Works exactly as you described. I thought it was a really neat feature. I play around with width fairly often when I mix so I can see this being pretty useful

Finally! My expensive paper-weight can go into disco mode!

I will most probably setup a PC workstation to help with the testing.

I have an MC Mix and an MC Transport (both, excellent at keeping papers from flying).

Eucon experience: Moderate. I've only used it to mix an album on Cubase. But, I'm fine with all other network based tech.

Plugins: UAD, most high end mixing and mastering plugins, let me know if you want anything tested in particular.

Hardware: 2009/2012 Mac Pros running from 10.6 to 10.7 to 10.8, Windows 7

I won't be able to test big sessions as most of them are on Mac. But, I guess I can create dummy sessions.

I'm all yours for the testing period, but please tell me that this can be translated to OS X by Justin or any of the devs.

Also, will any of the Eucon updates crush this? Or is this the official deal? I have had one update nagging at me since last month.

I have absolutely no idea.
I'm developing using 2.6.2 78202 version software, and my firmware is up to date.
I loaded 2.7.1 briefly and it seemed to work, but I certainly didn't dig deep.

The 3.0 software update is apparently going to arrive when Protools 11 does.

Be sure to keep that OSX version in mind. Those guys seem to post much more than Windows EuCon users .

I don't come so often on the forum to post, although I am a regular user of Reaper since V2.0. But this news got me excited, I have been very disappointed in the past with the poor number of choices when it comes to control surfaces and reaper (the HUI protocol is not enough imo), and the fact that the Eucon protocol is finally being implemented is the only thing I was hoping for, for at least 2 years !

I am using mac osx so I won't be concerned directly before a little time but when mac osx will be tested, I might actually buy a unit just for that because I can't wait for this day to happen ! The MC series is exactly what I need !

This was just to express my gratitude for the development of this particular feature, and if ever you need another alpha tester (I am not even sure what the policy is about it since it's the first time I read this part of the forum) on the mac version you can hit me up !

I've been looking for a more sophisticated solution for control surfaces for Reaper before taking the plunge on a new kit. The Artist Series is what I currently have my eye on. If you're interested, I can buy a couple of Artist Series units and help with some programming tasks -- I'm a reasonably proficient C++ coder and I've used WDL on a past project of mine. I don't know what kind of rules for this extension you've worked out with Cockos, though.

Typical project size - only include ones that you are willing to subject to this torture test

EuCon experience level
Realized I forgot to put this info in my first post:
  • Hardware Setup
The computer I'm testing on has an i7 2600 processor and 12 gigs of Ram. I'm running 64 bit Reaper in Windows 7. My controller is an MC mix and it's using the latest version of the Eucon software (2.7.1)
  • Plug-in info
DMG Equality, Equick, Valhallaroom, VallhallaVintageVerb, Izoptope RX2 Declipper, Waves Rcomp, Waves L2 limiter, and Audioease Speakerphone. I use a spattering of other VSTs as well, but those are the ones that I turn to most frequently. I'm using an older 32 bit version of waves, so Rcomp and L2 are both bridged.
  • Typical Project Size
I use Reaper to edit and mix sound for movies, commercials, and other video projects. Project sizes range from just a couple tracks of voice over and music, to track counts in the triple digits. Nearly every project I do has a video track with it.
  • Eucon experience level I'm not a power user, but I know my way around the MC mix fairly well. I mixed two short films and a couple small web-videos in Pro Tools using an MC Mix last year. Love the controller, but hate Pro Tools. Reaper is my main squeeze now, so it's been while since I've done any real work with Eucon.

Had a chance to play around with the alpha plugin for a solid couple of hours tonight. Plenty of stuff is working well, but there is also lots of buggy behavior. I'll start with the biggest bug:

If Eucon is enabled Reaper will crash immediately if I try to load a project from within Reaper using the "Open Project" command in the file menu. Doesn't matter how big or small the project is, it crashes every time, even if I try to open a blank project with no tracks. Once it crashes I have to turn the power on the MC Mix off and on before I can get it to work again.

If I open a project from windows explorer it will load up just fine and all my tracks will show up on the controller. I tried this with a couple different short film mixes and they all loaded up alright so long as I didn't open them from within Reaper. I think the biggest project I opened had around 80 tracks. Once I figured out how to open projects without crashing everything seemed pretty stable.

Geoff, I know this build is still early and right now your biggest concern is to make sure the plugin can install correctly and doesn't cause crashes. I tested out as many features as I could and I've got a big list of bugs, nitpicks, and requests, but I don't want to bombard you if you're not ready for them yet. Let me know if should post my full list of notes now, or if you'd prefer me to hold off for the moment.

Since this thread started I've been doing some research and I'm going to invest in an Artist Transport unit soon. Will the driver work with this unit at all ?
I tried initializing the driver yesterday with no unit plugged in and it made Reaper crash instantly. That was definitely something new. Only way to let Reaper even initialize again was to delete the csurfeucon driver from the directory.

Config is I7 8350 quad / Gigabyte MB
16gb of GSkill Ram
TC Electronic SK48 audio Interface with v2.5 driver
StillWell Plug ins
Fairly common stuff I guess.
Let me know if you need anything.

Yeah, that's to be expected.

When you install EuCon there is some software that runs -- MC Client, EuCon Discovery, and EuControl, and the plugin expects to be able to find and converse with these apps.

You should be fine once the EuCon software is installed.

I'll look into that one.

Yeah that has to with initialization, in fact the first bug is likely related to this one, I'll also look into this.

Bring 'em on

Seriously, please do feel free to post any and all bugs, nitpicks, requests, the software will only get better from your kind and generous effort.

That goes for everyone out there.

This is going to be an absolute game-changer for me. I rely so heavily on my Eucon mix's and control, that when I can't use them, my workflow goes down the shitter and my mixes take exponentially more time.

Thank you so much for all of the hard work involved with this, and I'm thrilled to try this out on OS X as soon as possible.
