I find it really useful to read the manual, or other supporting books, then look at the videos. Kenny's rapid fire approach is great for covering lots of info fast. Jonny's approach is more laid back and suits alot of the time as well...

And then there is this forum populated by so many knowledgeable contributers and helpers...

...has to be the model others should follow...

Just watched two videos...

I loved the "dockers" one, I did not know you could do all this!!

The second one was "themes and layouts"... this one disappointed me, for layouts, as it showed very nice layouts, but the conclusion is that they are theme specific, and there is not hint on how to modify them.

I love the Rado theme, but I don't like the provided layouts, and I love those that are shown in the video!! So I would love to "merge" the RADO theme, and use the Kenny's layouts...

I have read somewhere: learn WALTER... but where can I find so information (for dummies?) on the subject ?

Yeah. Adjusting Layouts is not quite as easy as customizing the Dock. Otherwise I would have covered it. It's code. Not meant for the average or even the above average user. It's for those who make the themes that we all enjoy.

Here is the WALTER guide:

Kenny, you said somewhere that you don't mix in Reaper. never the less, do you have a work around for creating VCA type tracks in Reaper? or would you just stick with folder tracks and the related limitations?

btw, the dockers video helped me clean up some of up my workflow

I would definitely use folders.

What are the limitations vs using VCAs in Pro Tools?

Sends levels control of children when modifying the folder track level

Automation control over children working as master/slave.

Overall management of tracks levels on large mixes where we can't "add" a group of tracks to several "folders" when needed.

Are you saying that lowering the volume fader on the Folder doesn't also lower the post-fader sends on the Children?

Couldn't you use grouping for that?

yes

muting and soloing on the folder works so I would think it logical that the folder fader also works that way, but it doesn't

Steve
Just wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and support.

Putting something like this together can be challenging (like any project we do) and getting quick feedback from the people learning from it really makes it all worth while.

Thank you.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. You can pull the Folder Track volume all the way down and you'll still here the children sends loud and clear, untouched.

I can group all common children but not the Folder Track, it'd be counterproductive because Parents also "pass audio through" so levels won't be consistent. Having a dedicated track for this purpose makes the use of folder as VCAs pointless

Just thinking about it now and it makes perfect sense.

Folders are like busses. So the individual fader has no idea what's going on upstream.

VCAs don't control the summed output. They actually lower the individual faders.

So there's a few workarounds until Reaper has true VCA faders.

In my "Mixing Rock" title, I used busses to create a parallel compression effect.

The only sends on the drums was a drum reverb plugin.

So what I did was buss the drum reverb return to the drum buss as well. So the drum reverb level would stay constant while raising and lowering the buss.

When that is not an option (because your returns are being used by many different instruments) grouping using Master and Slaves makes the most sense as they will control the level of the individual tracks.

Hope that helps a bit.

So would you prefer that Folders behaved as a VCA or that a separate VCA track existed.

The problem with having your Folder be a VCA (although I like it as an option) is that you can't put sends or plugins on VCAs. There's no actual audio going through it. So if you want buss effects, you'd still need to create a separate buss.

Well, I've watched them all, and was rather astonished how little I learned.

Which is absolutely nothing negative about the tuts, which I thought were absolutely great, I'm just actually starting to figure out Reaper, is what it means.

There were one or two gems I picked up, and as a visual aid, it's a very helpful way for me to gird my loins and get ready for a true excavation of the manual.

Good stuff, thanks.

No, I wouldn't like to see Folder Tracks working as VCAs but I'd like to have some options per track to achieve some of those VCAs features we've talked about here.

Reaper newbie here coming from Protools to try Reaper. Does "Reaoer 4 Explained" cover how which virtual instruments come with Reaper and how to use them?

Also, does it cover getting started and file management, etc? (All the dry stuff that's tough to read through and understand in a manual)

Reaper doesn't come with VSTi in the way Sonar or Logic do - thank goodness - so the installation is streamlined and very easy.

That model (providing included VSTi or light versions of them) may have been right when the choice of instruments was very slim, but these days there are so many instruments that personal choice would render many included instruments redundant anyway. I have unused VSTi I bought years ago for a multiple of what Reaper costs today.

Progress!!

File management is I'm pretty sure covered though

Yes. We go over how to use VSTi plugins but we don't go over everything that they're capable of.

While the included stuff is useful, I tend to use almost all third party stuff.

As mentioned, you don't get the gigs of samples and presets that you get with most other DAWs these days.

Not to toot my own horn (toot toot) but one of the benefits for you is that I also came from Pro Tools before Reaper.

So I tend to cover things from that perspective because that's how I learned it.

In other words, the first things I learned was how to do all the things that you would normally do in Pro Tools.

In fact, my first title for Reaper Explained was going to be "Going from Pro Tools to Reaper" but I thought that was a too narrow scope.

Thanks

To be honest, so do I.

Seriously. I hate learning from a manual. Even though the Reaper one is great and I might be able to recite it from memory if forced to do so.

@Kenny: thanks for the walter guide!! I did not know it was there.
I'll have a look as I think I might use it, my main job is to work as a software engineer

Being French, I thought that there was a problem with the audio speed at first in your videos, sometimes you have very fast blasts of words, but now that I am used to your voice, it is ok, I understand nearly 100%, so it is great.

I never took the time to learn shortcuts and things like that, so I really love your tutorials!

I might jump in myself if I have the time.

I'm really surprised that someone hasn't made 100 layouts for the default theme by now.

Kenny,

I bought the Reaper 3 version when I first found out about it, and now I bought the Reaper 4 version. Thanks for the tips, tricks, and hints you've passed along in both of these videos - and for the solid way in which you presented all the great features of Reaper itself.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through all the V4 segments, but I didn't see anything on screen sets. Did I miss it, or is that something you didn't cover? Granted, it doesn't seem very complicated, but it would be cool to have that.

Also, one thing that continues to confuse me (and that's easy to do ) is the whole multi-channel thing - where you can send audio from a single track through multiple channels. Now, I admit, I haven't really seen the need to do that (at least not in my type of workflow), but I'd love to better understand that concept, along with the pin-control stuff (in/out) when using plugins. I've read about these concepts, but seeing them 'in use' would probably make things much more clear.

Hats off to you and the folks at Groove3 for making really useful products - they've made an immediate impact on how I do my work in Reaper.

Hook,

I don't believe Kenny covered 'screensets'. I haven't watched all the videos yet, but I didn't see screensets in the table of contents.

I don't think Kenny will mind if I point you to Jonny G's 'Tutorials for Reaper' site.

Screensets video here: http://tutorialsforreaper.com/2011/0...flow-reaper-4/.

Enjoy!

hey that's funny because I was just about to post this link to this free screensets tutorial...

I am happy it is there, because this is what I was looking for yesterday in Kenny's videos, and I did not find it...

in fact I thought the layouts you are showing were your's, now I realize they are the standard ones... I am wondering why the excellent RADO theme added new layouts, but removed the standard ones that are exactly the ones I need.. ?

Yeah. Screen Sets didn't make the cut again. On both titles I had it in the plan (along with about 5 others) but I had to make the cut somewhere.

It will definitely be in Reaper Tips and Tricks though.
