Default Possible to record MIDI & Audio on the same track?

Say I'm using a ReaInsert, sending MIDI to a Hardware Synth, and getting audio back. In order to reduce the clutter of needing two tracks (one to record midi, one to record audio) -- is there a way to record audio and midi on the same track, with the items one ontop one another? (like Free Item Positioning)

Cheers

Yes, it is possible to play back a MIDI item on a track that has ReaInsert on it (configured to send out MIDI and receive audio). You'll have to set the track's input selection to "record: output -> audio (stereo)" and also check the option "Monitor track media when recording". I'd recommend that you set global recording mode to "time-selection auto-punch" and set the time-selection to be exactly the length of the item you want to record audio into prior to record the audio (this prevents the mess you might be getting with takes that have different lengths). You'll end up having a two-take item consisting of the original MIDI take and the audio take underneath.

I'm often doing this (without free item positioning). Keep in mind that you might have to disable some fx of the track's fx chain that don't make sense while playing back the audio take (like ReaInsert also). The same applies while playing back the MIDI take.

it is possible but IMO not the best idea... I'd put the audio on it's own track, but that is just me...

Do you want to record them at the same time? If no, then it's really simple.

I want to record midi ~AND~ audio items on a single track, at the same time.

Is this possible somehow?

Looking at the Reaper Power book, it doesn't look likely. ReaInsert could be used but only to send incoming MIDI back out to a hardware synth and record the audio from that without the MIDI (not sure if be bothered to do that when I could just connect the two units outside the box!)

I agree it would be a nice feature. I only record MIDI as a backup in case I have some flubs in a good take so it would be nice to hide it behind the audio track.

It's not possible but you can record both on separate tracks and then combine the two in an instant by triggering the action "Take: Implode items across tracks into takes". You get exactly what you are looking for with minimal effort.

Thanks for the replies all. Sonic -- that's what I've been doing already! Cheers.

But It would be soo nice for us lazy midi-harware-synth-based musicians to beable to record the audio and midi from takes in one track :0)

Thanks, I'd not come across that one. Works for me.

VERY lazy guy here, too

@iqi616:

The only thing to be aware of with this method is that it might require enabling/disabling one or more track fx as you toggle between the MIDI take or the audio take to avoid some weird double processing.

New to hard synths, so had the same question. It seems that using ReaInsert and creating an audio send from that track to a new one (with parent unchecked)does a good job of keeping the timing in alignment. You just need to set the audio track to "record output" and remember to disable any fx before recording. Midi can then play the synth while rerecording and playing with the knobs. I hope a hybrid track is on the horizon.

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM if it's possible to use one track for both audio and midi?

ey-lol,well yes technically it is possible--but by default reaper is not allowing both to be recorded @ the very same time (as far i tell) -but!
there are some vst that will record internally,as you record midi kb data on same track=yes,it's possible that way.

admiral bumblebee only shows both midi+audio sitting, pre recorded+placed on same track-default options allow for that right?
1 can certainly have either pre_recorded audio or midi+record over the top live..same track.

Would be quick to mix - because we can have 64 track channels on one track, we could have 64 audio tracks on one fader + midi.
Save me a lot of mixing time...

I agree, no real need other than a more compact user interface. But I think ReaInsert is needed to do it properly, as I've read elsewhere!

ummm.... not my personal cup of tea... but if one fader is what you want you can easily do that with groups and\or [even better] with a VCA track to control all the others

and without the issue of having a 64 track multiout wav as the result...

I mean... what are you gonna do with this project when it's done?

I repeat myself... 'just you 'can' do it' ...doesn't mean it is a good way to go
