There is some JSFX which can do that like desc:MIDI Compressor 6N
Don't remember where I got it ^^
The best is MIDI CC Mapper which has a nice curve but it is only CC.

JS:Midi Velocity Control.
If you want to compress/expand only the snare, adjust the control to the snare note.
I use JS:Midi Velocity Scaler/Compress to adjust all the drum sequence, not only a note. That's useful when you work with patterns.

Great advice teniete, So do you find you have to do less individual midi note editing with this process?

I work with midi drum patterns. I drag a pattern, and if the velocity is too high, I move the Scale Factor. So, with the same pattern, I can have a very hard heavy metal drum or a very light pop drum. With this tool, you can compress or expand the velocity keeping the amount between the drum parts.

Indeed, DarkStar script may be a solution if you need extra precision :
https://forums.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=171382
But it is less handy to use (there is no curve presets)
These are JSFX effects. just download them and them in
Option->Show reaper resource folder->Effects
then restart REAPER or rescan VSTI.

Got it THX!
So I'm using EZ drummer, How would I use this effect?
I know you said it is only CC (which I believe it only effects channels with midi?) Sorry not a midi technical guy o= It doesn't seem to be effecting anything on the multi layered drum midi....
Again anyone if you can chime would be great...(-:
The JS compressor worked on the snare track receiving the midi sound, but the js velocity one did not have any effect....
thx, jeff

The effect needs to be inserted in the effects chain before the VSTi (EZdrummer) because the MIDI from the item (in the track) will pass through the MIDI plugin before it goes to EZdrummer.
Anyway along the lines of that plugin Teniente mentioned, but with a lot more features (and it's included in Reaper): MIDI Tool v2 [IXix]

I have placed the fx on those channels and I'm not getting any difference...I have tried putting the FX BEFORE and AFTER the EZD FX and still not getting any difference in sound...I have tried COMP 4N comp 4N (midi comp ect..) and comp 6N...
Am I missing anything?
Thx

Probably
Anyway, that JS FX was primarily designed for key-switching with a small (29-key) keyboard. Maybe that was tripping you up.
Have a look in this new thread: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=208678
I have ripped out all the key-switching code leaving just the MIDI compressor.
