Default An audible Pop every 40 seconds, consistently

Hi there, I'd be interest in your opinions of what the source of this may be.

Even when reaper is not either in play or record, even when its not armed for record there is a very audible "Pop" that occurs every 40 seconds give or take a second. This pop is completely consistent occurring every 40 seconds without exception. I'm also fairly certain that the pop only occurs while a sound is being input. I was Ebowing a guitar which made the pop very apparent but, did not notice the pop when the Ebow drone was stopped. I was thorough and did this over and over many times to be sure.

Since Reaper is not either playing, recording, or even in record mode, I am suspicious that the pop is sourcing from my Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 2nd Gen. I'd be interested to hear if this had been the situation for anyone and how I may proceed to troubleshoot or isolate and rectify the "pop" that happens every 40 seconds.

Thank you for your feedback! I did manage through optimizing my PC to get rid of other artifacts (dropouts and glitches), now its time to alleviate this game stopping "POP"!

Thank you!

Try increasing the buffer for your Focusrite ASIO settings.

Are you monitoring the input through the focusrite ("zero-latency monitoring") or through reaper?

What OS/version?

If you can record it and post a .wav somewhere demonstrating the sound it might help diagnostics.

Might be an intermittent process doing something on your computer and interrupting things.

Try what AlfaDude dude said; start by increasing the buffer size to maximum and seeing if it helps.

You could also install Process Explorer (if on windows) and watch it for processes that appear every 40 seconds, or processes that suddenly use some CPU every 40 seconds. Long shot, but sometimes it turns something up.

Check for any demo plugs....disable anything unnecessary running in the background from windows startup.

Give more info about your computer and audio interface.

Default Figured it out!

Thank you very much for your good feedback. I was just ready to increase the ASIO buffer when I decided to check the status of the S/PDIF. What I do is run my mic preamps into a Kurzweil Rumour and use its A/D conversion and S/PDif out into the Scarlett 6i6. I set both units to "Internal" clock when I should have set the Scarlett to "external" so that it is synced to the Kurzweil Rumour. That took care of the problem, quiet and no pops. I assume it could have been some Asyncronous clock issue, some crossing thing.

All is well, thank you for your feedback

Best,

Phil
