Default ILLUMINAIN'T SHIT (original folk/metal)?

https://www.reverbnation.com/wristlo...luminaint-shit

Not sure what genre if any this tune fits in. It's a folk/metal/pop track which for now is titled: ILLUMINAIN'T SHIT

Been wrestling with this tune/idea for a while. Had a bit of a hard time getting it to sound how I envisioned it. Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks BCF1
MIX 2
https://www.reverbnation.com/wristlo...luminaint-shit

Lyrics:

Pictuary, statuary palace made of cards
I don't know what you behold chained up in the yard
Fences fell and walls were built a milestone in the game
Feel the bridal in your mouth can't see who holds
And pulls the reins

White ‘n black any shade of brown
For wolves and snakes easy prey abounds
Everywhere there's a bird in a tree
Chirping, I can see you
But you can't see me

Force fed the menus always the same
A diet of fear followed with some pawn to blame
Have you seen their burning hole in the sky
Look at the clouds they're really purple
Butterflies

Feel the breeze it's the winds of change
With only the truth the words light up the page
A taste of liberty now you know what I mean
Prepare for battle and the horror it brings
yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah

The malfeasant liars, delivered us here
Shrouded in darkness injected with fear
Unleashed the hounds will corner the fox
Their chains will be useless once we break all the locks

Fighting with a fury for its freedom we must save
For this land where I bleed and the home of my grave

Mother fuckers want to go to war - mother fuckers want global war

You think you can control me ? You better think again

I can see through the fog and this is your end my friends

ha. i like it. dripping with the attitude of a probably unstable person, and i'm a fan of the borderline obnoxious whistling. i did not forsee the turn it took in the second half. probably one of my favorite things yet heard through this particular channel

it reminds me of the contempt of someone who is also completely insane. which is a hilarious combination, or can be.

Filled with attitude, yes.

Unstable ???

a : not steady in action or movement ?

b : wavering in purpose or intent ?

c : lacking steadiness : apt to move, sway, or fall ?

d(1): liable to change or alteration (2): readily changing (as by decomposing) in chemical or physical composition or in biological activity ?

e : characterized by lack of emotional control ?

f : all of the above ?

Damn! Various vibes in there!
The fast section reminds me of Motorhead (RIP Lemmy).

Really good legato work on the gtr there, at times Black Sabbath-like.

I can't comment on the mix either bc I'm using a phone speaker but there was no prob with the sound afaict.

This is GREAT stuff!

THe heavy part really works well! I love that... RAWK!

IMHO, in the slow part, there's too much compression on the acoustic guitars.. they really sound squashed.. Especially with that super-reverby vocal..

How about you send a little of those guitars (not all of it, but a veeeery small amount) into the vocal reverb bus?) Even if we don't "hear" the revrb on the guitars, they will still "feel" in the same room as the vocals

Did I mention I loved the heavy part? Great stuff man!

I'm having trouble getting those guitars to sound good, think I had the mic's aimed at unfriendly locations and the vocal effect is rather heavy, I have a sound I'm after but not sure how to acheive it.

Second listen
"Look at the clouds they're really purple
Butterflies"
You probably picked this line out of thin air but for me this really works. Dont know why but it does.

About compression on the acoustic, yeah maybe you could try a different compressor, maybe one with one of those high pass filters in it so it doesn't get triggered by anything under 200, or maybe try automation for the extremes and lighter compression on the result. Compressors can give a reedy quality to acoustics.

The song is strong and grows more on second listen

Thanks Garrick For what it's worth good, bad or indifferent the only thing that came out of thin air was the whistling. That just happened. The purple butterflies and all the rest of the lyrics were chosen thoughtfully.

I will certainly try and experiment with these ideas within the scope of my understanding. Always hoping to broaden that scope could you be more specific with what you mean by "try automation" please ? I see that term thrown around in regards to many different aspects, I get that it means to use a tool or system to control a process with a reduced need for human attention but maybe you could guide my nose closer to the shit, so to speak........

automation is usually meant wailing and rocking out on the knobs along to the song with the added benefit of editability later instead of the old days where it all went str8 to tape so no fucking off. either that or sidechaining can be used to great effect with compressors. what if the compressor is being triggered with a bit of the main mix leaking in? what if the ratio is being modulated by a smoothed envelope follower of the input signal at specific gain levels? i don't know if those would help specifically but there is much to be mined from going in and fucking around with questions like these, you never know what might add that bit of shimmer it needed, a little bit of dynamism from the coupled interplay between related elements in the mix.

yes, the holy modal rounders. they're both presumably alive and kicking still, but i've been knocking around the idea off installing a small altar for them as household gods.

Ok, this helps my understanding and explains why "automation" can be or is part of so many tools. Thanks for the bit of education. I've used sidechain compression with one tracks compression being triggered by another track or even group of tracks a time or two but only in a very basic way. One compression setting. The few ideas you threw out have me thinking. I never considered the compression ratio for example could be adjusted in real time while governed by x + y parameters and triggered by another track(s). WOW !! The possibilities are truely endless and only limited by ones imagination.

As a green but semi serious hobbiest this is great stuff to ponder and dive into. I'm having yet another reminder that I don't know SHIT about this art and I like it !!!!

Thanks again for the push and the ideas !!!!!!
