Default Tracking legato guitar

I’m trying to record a solo direct, that is mostly legato/tapped, but occasionally I pick when crossing strings. My problem is if I turn up the input level, I clip on the picked notes. Can I use a compressor plugins to fix this? What is the normal way of doing this, hardware or software,

I’ve tried that, but then the legato notes don’t come out. Through my amps I have a tube screamer to boost the signal as I have medium output pickups.

The clipping is at the input so you must turn it down.

Once the signal is in the computer without clipping you can do whatever it takes to get the boost required....turning up the amp sim input, adding a tube screamer plugin in front like you would through your amps or using compression or limiting to catch only the louder note peaks.

yeah, if you can't hear the legato stuff, put the amp sim or compressor on afterwards...

I dunno if you're clipping you may have more than medium output pickups?
