Default Workflow problem: Menu interrupts playback after pressing Alt (SOLVED)

I'm doing some audio editing and am becoming really aggravated by a little menu that keeps popping up when I hit the space key. In the action list the only command associated with the space key is play/stop, but something else is happening and it's driving me nuts.

After zooming in or out, the space key opens up a menu that shows Restore, Move, etc. It should just play or pause.

What is happening here? How can it not happen?

[edited title for better reference]

Good question. I don't think so. I've trying to reproduce this behavior in other programs and have not been able to.

But you've hit on something, because it's not just zooming. I zoom with Alt+mousewheel, and that is causing this behavior. But so is just pressing the Alt key, pausing, pressing space key. Is this just me? Seems like it would be a pretty noticeable bug if not...

There's a preference to prevent ALT from focusing main menu. Give that a check?

Thanks FnA...that works. Oh the world of Reaper...it can do everything Sonar could do, more even sometimes, but everything is just different enough to give someone who was expertly proficient on Sonar fits. Everything is a different key, in a different menu...I haven't made much music since the Sonar announcement, every time I open the program I know I'm going to be 'learning' as much as anything else.

This fix, for anyone else who has this problem, is located:

Preferences -> General -> Keyboard/Multitouch -> Prevent ALT key from focusing main menu

I can't blame you for that. There's always some thing to ponder.

I have that pref enabled. I have alt-mousewheel on sideways scroll. It is still "sticky" in a way when some floating windows have focus. Fx most often. I will use alt mouse wheel then mouse wheel with no modifier (horizontal zoom here) won't work unless I hit alt again.

Brilliant, that one one was really bugging me as well.

Thats one thing I love about reaper, these things are always solvable.
