Default '10 Years'... first song in a while

And here it is....https://soundcloud.com/opivy/10-years

Still not convinced the mix is right but it was a song idea I had from a while ago. The first vocal recording was probably a lot better but I deleted that thinking I could do better...now I'm not so sure

Feedback/ suggestions would be appreciated...

Yeah, it's kinda weird but the soundcloud track seems to be nowhere near as wide as what I was listening to in Reaper. Plus, there's a sorta phasey sound going on that is not as obvious when I was mixing.

I might flatten all the faders and try again..

Sounds pretty wide for me - hard not to sound wide with hard panned guitars playing different things. I can see how it's hard to mix, once you go out of the safe zone of double tracked riffs it's gonna get tricky. IMO sounds good considering the challenging material you wrote yourself.

Hell YEah!

Get that main voc nailed down in the center a bit louder and you got it.

I'm gonna need another OpIvy song to cruise behind blueheads and scare them next summer...

I hear this lower voc during the verse? that the one i would put in the center loud and strong, up close... IMHO

I love the guitars, what an f'n groove you got goin here, jammin this and wondering if the upstairs neighbors are awake yet.

Thanks for the feedback...

Zeecat- you're right, they are probably wide enough, it's more like the guitars are denser than the mix in Reaper. Not sure why, but they seem to fill alot of the space and that maybe why vox are a bit buried.
I did intend to have the vocals back a bit though- that's how I like my music...not too up front.

Not_Here- As you probably hear, I've got one main vocal about 20% left and another parallel vocal about 20% right for the verse. I did have a hell of a time panning all the vocals and admit it does need some revisiting.

I'll have fiddle and try and get things to sound clearer. Still not sure what the phasey-ness on the soundcloud mp3 is though.

This is a rocking song!

but yeah, like all the others said, I'd like to hear your awesome voice a little louder in the mix.

Well, I tweaked it a bit and I think it's a little better.
A few eq adjustments, a bit of panning and gave the kick a bit more thump...

What do think now?

WOW much better. It sounds like you have the deeper vox sitting a little off center? ( L ) I still think it could use just .5db to 1db more in volume. the verb on the main vox is sweet. ( low main vox C, and higher main vox panned L 35%-ish & R 35%-ish behind? just an idea)

at about 1:10 the bk vox get lost a little they sound really good but those could stand with a little bump up too, unless of course that's exactly what you wanted, and it's all good.
I still wannna hear that punk snarl a bit louder at 1:30 too, f'n tight right there!

don't touch the gtr's they are perfect.

bout 2:35 the energy starts to come up nice touch.but still just that tiny bit more, vox

I really really like this one, listened three times in a row just now.
to hell with the tv...

When I sit back and listen on the monitors, what "i think" i'm hearing is the sides are a bit louder than the center. not that anything is out of balance ( might need to keep main vox more in center if it's panned a little now.) and maybe it's just in need of a little boost in the center db-wise. I could be wrong. I won't mind if you tell me to kick rocks...

all of the above is merely me thinking out loud as the song goes by. Your Mixes are already totally good and sound great, I'm still learning how to get this good.

as an added note: when I let your soundcloud just feed me the next song (The Importance of Unimportance) the center volume is there on that track and your vox volume is right there with the gtr's...

this will definitely be added to the windows down playlist.

Thanks for the listens and comments.
That's some good feedback Not_Here...
I know's there's still a few balance issues with all the vox...I'm hearing it too. Some places the backing vocals could come up, widened, etc but I'll settle with what I have.
I've got a bad habit of just having to 'finish' a mix and can't leave it for a while to reset my hearing. So I'll put it in my 'finished for now' folder along with a few dozen other tracks to revisit one day. That's what I gotta do...! Spend some time fixing up all those annoying little mix problems from my past songs!

But thanks again- always good to get a fresh pair of ears and some suggestions.

This song has a great groove. Your mix is getting pretty close to what you want. I think that the vocals could still be a lttle louder, but it is close enough now that is probably just a personal taste thing. One could argue that recording it so that the lyrics remain somewhat unclear adds an element of mystery to the feel of the song. On my system, the bass guitar is not real punchy. I suspect that have EQ'd out a lttle too much of the frequencies below 200 Hz to avoid muddiness. Finding the right EQ for the bass guitar on this recording is tricky because the kick drum is pretty busy and is competing for the same part of the sonic spectrum. It might be worthwhile to try setting up the compressor on the kick drum to reduce the sustain of the kick to give the bass guitar more room. But overall this is already an engaging recording. Tweaks will only make it better.

Thanks man. You're right. I was having a little trouble getting the kick and bass to play together so I did chop off quite a bit of the bottom freq on the bass. Otherwise, I was going to get caught in that same old trap of spending countless hours trying to get it right.

In the end, it seemed to work. The bass actually has a shit-ton of low-mid dirtiness on it and sounded much better once I cleared away some of the low end. The punch I tried to get more from the kick as I more wanted the bass and guitars to sit together more.
