MIDI editor TABS
Add some way of switching among the various MIDI items when only one MIDI editor window is used. Suggested way of switching: TABS. I think that is even more practical than FL's way of doing it (dropdown box): of course, add the normal tab actions, such as ctrl+tab to switch next, ctrl+shift+tab to switch previous tab, middle click closes tab, dragging and rearranging tabs allowed, etc. I think this should be of high priority.

This would be cool if you could underlay some ghost notes from the other tabs.

Yes, tabs would be great, but with an option to view all tabs simultaneously but only edit the currently active one. This would solve lots of problems that we have at the moment...

Shameless bump!
Tabs should also support ghosting, naturally!
With the difference that when you click on the ghosted note, it SHOULD NOT focus to another tab, meaning, ghosted notes are only there as a REFERENCE, not as a means to SWITCH TO ANOTHER CHANNEL!
The sane behavior of ghost notes should be the same as showing the ghost of audio/MIDI item behind any envelope (just visual feedback, nothing interactive)!

What about tab colors?
If you're going to show multiple ghosted instruments, why not have the tabs reflect the color assigned to that MIDI track?
If filling the tab with a solid color isn't feasible (it might make the text unreadable), you could just render a stripe on the top or bottom of the tab in the channel's color.

Update: coloring of the tabs using item color to make tabs easier to distinguish!

I don't need that at all, since I build a program, that let me easly pass through all open windows, with just one hotkey.
I simply open each item in seperate window, and pass through all of them.
also, this way i don't have the problem, when pressing ghost note accidentally, the ME switch focus.
on my signature
I'd rather preffer they implement the Patterns bank and Inspector (cloned of FL), instead.

Yeah, well others might work more easily with this included, without installing additional programs, thank you very much.
What if this was optional? Would that be too hard on you as well?
I think this could be easier to implement than pattern banks and inspector. They have project tabs already, it's bound to be recycleable code in some way.

Using a hotkey to parse thru all open windows is much less efficient than viewing all of your open (midi editor)windows listed in a row of tabs and directly selecting the one you want to edit.

I really like this idea.
Here's a refined approach I propose:
So, here's the way I see it. You're editing various items in the ME zoomed out.Naturally you resort to tabs, as it's easier.
Now, think if you zoomed in on a couple of notes. Ghost notes of other parts appear in black with the note name colored like the item. You edit the current item and if a ghost note next to the one you adjusting need a nudge or different velocity or whatever, to switch parts you just click the colored bit. If you by accident click the note, most of it (in black) won't do anything. Oh, naturally the tab display updates to show the current part.
What do you think?

IMHO, ghost notes should only be a reference. They must not be used to switch between the items. That's buggy behavior to me. So I kind of disagree with the above idea myself. I'd rather ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab between the tabbed items myself.

again i find myself agreeing with ED and disagreeing with all the alternate "solutions" being proposed. Tabs in the midi editor is a beatifully elegant and most of all - simple - proposal which would massively improve MIDI handling.

A most amazing and practical system these tabs would be in Reaper, Evil Dragon! Workflow improvement, plus the ghost channel reference would help A LOT in arranging our music.
The tab feature is the feature that would be the make me definitely switch to Reaper.

I agree about the ghost note switching behaviour. Sometimes I have to draw a note on the note below and then move it up one because there is a ghost note where I want to draw

Oh Yeah! This is great news. Switching through MIDI items with tabs, wünderbar!
And this already mentionned suggestion:
clicking on multiple tabs adds ghosted transparent versions of those channels.

Thank you for asking, Shakey! just now read your post.
No, it was this "Faboomm - Boahoaahoahh!"-thing that's likely to happen on New Years Eves. But I'm working on it.

I would also like to MOUSESCROLL over the tabbar to switch between the tabs in both directions!
This is something that TabMixPlus does in Firefox
Also, having an option to UNDOCK any tab by just dragging it outside of current MIDI editor view would be quite useful to some users.

A couple of ideas:
-- Put the tabs on the Menu bar lane rather than having another lane at the top of the Editor window?
-- And list them on a sub-menu on the [View] menu?

Evil Dragon has suggestions of an amazing feature as far as the tabs goes, simply great and it would be amazing when it comes to work flow when switching tracks quickly.
What also would be great that if the Reaper developers go ahead with Dragon's suggestions, i'd hope that they keep the option where you can open up multiple piano veiws, i mean imagine having the tab option aswell as being able to have multiple piano veiws open. The reason i'm loving the multi piano veiws is because it enables composers like me to work quickly and easily, imagine working on a cello part aswell as a piano part, then you might want a little snare playing with it, you could just click in note data on any of the open piano views to quickly tweak something so that the song keeps flowing, agree?
Having the tab option and keeping the current multi piano veiw would be infact the best workflow that i've ever used and i think that many would agree. If a user doesn't like using tabs, they can just use the multi piano view. Simply brilliant if this happens.
Another thing i'd like to say is that it would be alot better if the CC data drawing was more like FL's and Cubase's, it's too inconsistant.
My name is Dan by the way and i'm a big fan of Reaper!!

I disagree here - I just went by how it's done with the main Project tabs - they are below the menu bar as well. Why break consistency?

I LOVE tabs :-)
Ctrl + click to select/de-select multiple tabs so that when you just click on a tab it becomes the active one.
Shift + click to select multiple active tabs.
