What is your "best song" ???
We all know it is relative.
Who cares what other people think or how much money we made.
What do YOU think is your best song ever. What you think, as the artist and creator, is something you are very proud.
Please, post a link - URL - to what you are proud no matter what the industry and critique believe - f*ck them !
Here, we are proud of our creations:

Relative? Yes. Subjective? Definitely.
Unfortunately, we do all care what others think (whether we like to admit it, or not). It's in our nature. It's not something to deny, but embrace. It's HOW you handle the reality of how people perceive your music that matters. Not everybody can be a superstar, jetting around the world on tour with millions in the bank. Some of us are just happy making music. We've identified it as our passion. After many years of disappointment, I've determine it's the journey that really matters in regards to making music. Nobody can take away the joy I have writing something new that really spins my beanie. Few things make me as happy. If you're a sensible person, then you have to see the advantage in investing all your time and effort in the process of writing/recording something you love (that which you can control), and not in the way people perceive your music (little or no control).
I'd be interested in knowing what YOU think is YOUR best song. Post a URL!

Exactly. Do denote *the* one.
And do you also address those who don't sing but play, produce, write text, ... ?

First of all I can't believe this thread doesn't have more replies. I was looking forward to go through people's best songs.
The song I like the most out of all the ones I have worked on was a collaboration with an artist known as Craven Canary. She had posted this short little snippet of her vocals recorded on what I assume was usb microphone. And she had challenged people on myspace to add their own music. I cut up her vocals to repeat certain lines to make it longer. I added chords on the piano. I took tiny parts of her vocals and put it through huge long reverbs, and compressed them to turn it into a choir like effect. She was very very pleased with the result. And I can still listen to this and enjoy it.

"The next song song is my best" is a cliché. I don't buy it
The (1) best?! no I can't do that
These are the best (the one's I like most) in different era's.
1) Portastudio, sound on sound
1987 - Ta mej med: CZ1000, RX7, mike'd ampeg vt40 guitar amp
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vvhfwewc3f...j_med.mp3?dl=0
2) Atari, Notator, analog mixer
1989 - Gently Weep: Wavestation, TX81Z, Alesis D4
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ne9pglwgt3..._weep.mp3?dl=0
3) Windows 95 Digital Orchestra, analog mixer,
1999 - Här är jag: Wavestation EX
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ta3kwbzvnh...r_jag.mp3?dl=0
4) Window 10 VST Era:
2015 - Unfrozen: Bass down pitched guitar

For mine I don't really know. I have a handful that I feel came out a bit better than the others, but not an absolute number one. "Next one will be the best" kinda makes sense. If I had to pick one from the pile, maybe this one:

As others also posted recordings they did not exactly sing themselves, I'd like to mention the piece I consider to be the best I (we) ever did. In this live recording, I only played the piano and the virtual trumpet and wrote the lyrics, and of course did the recording / mixing.

"The next song song is my best" is a cliché. I don't buy it
The "next one best" line is not original, but it's not a cliché. I first heard it said by some novelist, when asked to name his best book. It's said tongue in cheek, and not meant to sell something, so one doesn't need to buy it or not buy it.
I could post my worst songs here (I have many), and I'm sure all of you would collectively nod in agreement. But in truth, there's not gonna be a lotta love on this page for my type music - not enough synths, effects, or screeching guitars - but that's ok. I like what I hear from you guys, even if not my style, and I try to listen all the way through (ok, up to about 7 minutes). And in terms of recording expertise (I'm a total amateur), and Reaper ins and outs, there's something I can learn in just about every post.
Personally, I believe in lyrics are the most challenging part of a song....not just words but phrasing that fits
a rhythm. I like lyrics that are audibly decipherable (I'll work to understand them but not strain to simply hear them). I believe lyrics should make the listener think.....a little mystery (if possible), but not too hard to solve - certainly not incomprehensible. If not that then at least a little clever, or maybe even humourous.....just not too basic - that's lazy. Lazy lyrics can render a good song bad, and distract from even superb musical content.
I hope every songwriter here will challenge himself from time to time with lyrics.
So....since I'm not allowed to refer to my next song here, I'll post my last one. It's been tested for two months now by the SoundCloud bunch (for what that's worth). You may like it, maybe not - but this is what I do. Bruce

Well that's not true.
We got metal, jazz, fusion, blues, orchestral, country, norwegian folk songs and some synth stuff
I think this it's the first americana contribution in this forum and at least I liked it.

??? Not true, IMHO.
E. g. my band does just live recordings with singer, sax, drums, guitar, bass, and me playing a Reaper driven setup of virtual instruments that are intended to sound as "natural" as possible.

Similar to me. I use an ALL VSTi setup, while also trying to sound as 'natural' as possible.
As for 'best song', my favourite of my own is 'Where You Go'...It's not technically brilliant, or even well sung, but I wrote and sang it in one sitting, while very upset about the fact I might not get to see my daughter again (ex was being difficult about contact) and put it into a song. Strangely relevant again now actually....Ex's...pssshh

How will I ever make this work?
While this isn't the best song I've recorded, it's one that I'm quite proud of because of how much work was involved in getting it to this state:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vd0ih46egi...loved.mp3?dl=0
Guitar intonations didn't match, requiring some Melodyne DNR. They also needed a lot of cutting, pasting and timing fixes. Violin player (by his own admission) wasn't very good so I had him do four or five passes and edited together the usable parts into something that ended up quite different from what he originally played. Violin part needed a LOT of pitch/ timing correction and volume automation. I thought a Cello would sound good so I MIDI'd something together, despite not knowing anything about cello.

I've only got instrumentals. I think my favourite (at the moment) is one that won a Composition Challenge on thefretboard forum in the UK with the theme of 'Flavours Of The World' (link below which hopefully works outside the UK). All done with Reaper. My guitar parts are real, but the rest is programmed.

Sooo yeah, I don't believe in the next song cliche as well .lol
I recorded a lot of stuff through the years, but there's always one song that I keep on playing and wanting to re-record over and over again till I do it justice.
I recorded it like 5 times in the last 15 years, always thinking that THIS time, I'll do it right, but I never do.
Oddly enough, it's a live version I did a few years back with my cellist on vocals that I feel conveys the emotions I wanted to share the best. We had only played a couple times together before this show, so it's loaded with mistakes... and quite poorly recorded at that... but somehow, the magic happens.
I gotta re-record one of our live shows we do nowadays, as we're much more used to each other now, and that song gets requested every single set we do.

Yeah, some songs stick like glue on our psyche. Maybe a combination of sympathetic vibrations and repetition? Not sure, but I have a few of these songs that keep nagging me. Sometimes I feel like songs come from outside me and I'm just a receiver - like a radio to a radio station. These songs are the ones that tend to stick around and become part of my reality/existence, more than the songs that I compose when I work them technically from my own will. Not sure this makes sense?
Ohhh ya, I also have a song that I have tried to record several times, but fail to be satisfied about the result. Thing is this: when I play it LIVE it always sounds great, not matter how much I mess it up! There must be something about the vibrations in the air that analogue or digital recordings cannot pick up?
I still don't get all there is regarding the power of music...

Soundcloud problem
For some reason, when I click on the links to Soundcloud stuff posted on this page, the music never plays - it just gets stuck loading. I see the whole Soundcloud page but the song itself gets stuck loading. Soundcloud works just fine when I go to it(not from the links here). Anyone else having this problem?

I'm an old jazz nut from the 70s and 80s and the thing that caught my attention the most is the trumpet because you said it was virtual. I played guitar with one of the all time greats trumpet player back in the 80s by the name of Stan Mark. We played in both jazz quartets and quintets, but one of the greatest gigs was in his big band.
It's not easy to make a solo virtual trumpet sound that good and you did a great job on this Michael. May I ask which virtual software you used?

Thanks A LOT
The trumpet is "The Trumpet", a Kontakt library by Sample Modeling. The sound chosen is "Flugelhorn".
It is played live with a keyboard and a TEC BBCv2 breath controller. (In fact the complete recording is just the band playing live. No overdubs / comping, ...)

I've been trying to think what I consider some of my best stuff. I'm an old, old, old fart, so my stuff wont be too appealing most of you. I might add, my stuff goes back some 55 years.
Back in the 1990s going into 2000s I composed and recorded scores for outdoor videos. This is the intro for an elk video.
https://youtu.be/6_QfGm0XZUc
A while back my wife came to me and told me she would like to try singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". I kind of laughed and said, " OH OH", I had never played it before and she said she would like piano and strings.
https://youtu.be/T0gLTeYzc34
As far as regular type music goes, I produced an album a couple of years ago for a guy that had played music all his life and was 80 years + old. We ended up recording 11 songs that he had written and this is one of them.
https://soundcloud.com/tod-904566455...iend-3/s-78A77
Here's one of my firsts recordings of a song I wrote. I recorded it in 1965 on my old Ampex stereo recorder, it's called "What's Your Name & What's Your Game". It's just me on my old Thomas Organ and Epiphone Guitar. The bass is the organ bass pedals.

I wanted to restrict my selection only to songs in Reaper, but then I came across two much earlier songs which I really like and wanted to include here:
Longing for the Sea
https://soundcloud.com/nowotone/long...he-sea/s-NwlHi
It's an early example of my electronic songs. I recorded it after I had upgraded my studio a little in 1989. However, this is still a Tascam Portastudio 4 track production.
Head over Heels
https://soundcloud.com/nowotone/head-over-heels/s-Bdnyo
Written in 1988 for my band "Schroeder's Image", this version is the solo recording I made in 1992 when I had access to a Tascam 8-Track. Unfortunately, I lost the master tape and with it most of the songs in good quality. This is one of the few good versions surviving.
And now for my favourite songs recorded in Reaper (one from each genre I'm active in):
1) You can relax (Prog-rock-pop)
https://nowo.bandcamp.com/track/you-can-relax
Recorded originally by the duo SteNo in 1988, this song has seen more incarnations than any other. Apart from the original production, there are three acoustic ones, a rock version from 1993, one from 1997 and an electronica/techno version from 2000. This one is by far the best version. If you are interested in the original, here you go - one of my first Tascam Portastudio 4 track productions (before I just bounced tracks with two tape machines): https://soundcloud.com/nowotone/you-can-relax-1/s-yvqfP
2) Elli Espi - Starting Line (Nowo Downtempo Remix)
https://soundcloud.com/nowo/elli-esp...owntempo-remix
I can't claim any songwriting credits here, this is Elli Espi's song. The New York singer/songwriter didn't just upload her songs to soundcloud, but also just the vocal stems and offered them for remixes. This version from 2015 is slower and much darker than the upbeat original version. Unfortunately, it is not online anymore. Elli deleted all of her song and most of the remixes a couple of years ago, only two remixes of this song, including mine, are still online ( https://soundcloud.com/elliespi)
3) Entropic Ecstasy (Psytrance)
https://soundcloud.com/nowo/entropic-ecstasy
After playing mostly conventional instruments and recording rock/pop songs the past few years, I'm currently working nearly exclusively on Psytrance songs. Don't ask me why, especially as my first attempts six years ago weren't really that great. But now the inspiration just hit me repeatedly and also gave me the excuse to buy myself a few soft- and hardware synths I had on my wishlist for quite a while.
Why especially this song? Because the one that I hope will become my best song isn't finished yet and I just (shameless plug here) made a video for this song of which I'm also quite proud! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PILLn3XIlGU

I came for the music and stayed for the elks
But the music is also really good - both video and sound are working well together

Well done, both of you! I'm very impressed. For some reason, my wife, who's a lovely alto has so far refused to sing on one of my songs. Perhaps I should ask her what she would like to sing.

Very nice & professional sounding song. It's not really my music, but I did enjoy listening to it.

How cool is that! I really like it. It already sounds very good, if you had said it was recorded in a professional studio, I would have believed you.

Thanks Nowo, the tracks you list all sound great, although that type of music is not my thing.
However, I checked out your acoustic stuff and you are certainly an accomplished piano player.

I just wrote it. I haven't recorded it yet.
It's for my wife.
Honey sometimes it's annoying that you always know just what to do.
I don't mean to imply that I doubt you, nothing could be further from the truth.
So I want you to know that I know that you know just what to do.
You always have the right idea and pick a course certain to be true.
But Baby, I just want to tell ya, just to put it out there
'cause we don't want no elephants in this room!
So I just want to say, to put it another way
So I just want to say that sometimes...
Sometimes I. Do. To.
