Any pointers on how to get a guitar tone like this?

I remember hearing this tone and trying to get something close. I think Jim uses a custom tele with some humbuckers. The tone is clear but gritty at the same time.

Some are more into guitar tone than I and might have better advice. But I might get you close. I use an amp modeler, and I don't recognize the amp sound. The guitar could indeed by a tele with humbuckers, though I'm not certain. As for the amp, start with a lot of drive to get the distortion, then EQ out the low end steeply below about 100 hz. Also, to me it sounds like the high end rolls off gradually above maybe 2.5K, enough that there is still some high end but not too edgy and bright.

Tweak those settings based on the guitar and amp you're using, but I think that will be a starting point.

A Tele into an AC30 would be my ultimate nightmare rig, but I like the tone

I don't own a guitar like that, but humbuckers would surely be less bright than the single coil P/U's normally in a Tele.
