Default Problem I download backing tracks from youtube

OK, I download a drum backing track from youtube and try to import it to Media here on Reaper, but when the track shows up it says "off line".

What seems to be my problem?

How do you download it? In what format?

The download comes out as mp4 format and I have it on VLC media player. I think I'm using the "free Download manager" program.

Really bums me out, use to be able to download backing tracks off of yt and into Reaper.

Thanks for your reply.

I usually download to MP3 using something like http://youtubemp3.to/

MP3 seems more reliable than MP4 for audio.

I just set up my computer to go to outputs 3/4 then hardwire the 3/4 outputs to the 3/4 inputs. Then in Reaper I record stereo using the 3/4 inputs. Reapers output is going to 1/2 so I still hear it all.

I've had internal loopback on my soundcards since 1999 - for some reason I was aware of that back then and have always made sure my SCs had that feature - which means I just check loopback and whatever the output is (say 1/2) then recording on 1/2 inputs gets the signal. Incredibly handy but without that something like voicemeeter should work minus the hardwiring.

For the OP, use something like keepvid or similar and choose the MP3 option instead of MP4.

I'm using this free and portable all-in-one AV-conversion tool (Windows): http://www.pazera-software.com/produ...io-video-pack/

You can even choose to let its audio converter extract the original audio stream without re-compressing it (usually embedded youtube audio is AAC) avoiding yet another generation loss due to additional conversion.

Yeah, back when I had 24 inputs / outputs on my old XP, I could patch anything to anything, well and output to any input, with the software. But since I'm not recording bands anymore I've just got a Komplete Audio 6 which doesn't have that capability.

That looks pretty cool SonicAxiom, does that take care of all or nearly all YouTube audio?

Also, how to you know what YouTube or other audio web sites are streaming? Or is that taken care of automatically in the software?

FreeAudioVideoPack is capable of converting between virtually any audio and video format. I'm using it to convert files already present on my hard disk. Depending on the situation, I may choose to simply extract an original audio stream from a video without re-compression (if I wanna use the audio in Reaper) or I may choose to convert it to mp3 using the best quality settings if no further DAW processing is planned.

To download video files from youtube, I'm using browser add-ons/extensions for Opera/Firefox (like "Youtube Downloader lite") which insert a download button beneath the videos that lets you choose the desired video resolution you wanna download. After download is finished, I launch FreeAudioVideoPack, choose the desired conversion method (audio/video) and output format and then sometimes tweak some of the output parameters (like bit rate, sample rate or video size, etc.) or just choose one of the numerous existing presets.

If you use Windows, you can use the WASAPI driver in shared loopback mode to accomplish this without the physical cables.

Thanks Fergler, do you mean in Reaper? What exactly would be the steps for doing that and making it work? I've never used anything but ASIO.

EDIT: And thanks to you too SonicAxiom.

On my Win7 machine, it works like this:

Go to Reaper Preferences>Audio>Device

From the Audio system drop down, select "WASAPI" and Mode "Shared loopback".

Set a track input to either mono or stereo and Mute that track. (Important, apparently).

Record arm that track and you should be receiving signal from whatever's playing in your net browser.

If you don't mute the track you'll get feedback that will frighten the hell out of you (and your system). Another way to avoid this is to make sure track monitoring is off.

Thanks for your reply.
Try that one site http://mp3skull-tube.net it uses Youtube API and the whole process of searching and downloading mp3 files or even any video format, includes 4K is really simple and fast.
