Monitor only when no track media present?

I'm looking for a way to monitor a track only when it's not playing back media/midi. The use case is that I have a breath and orientation controller that is highly sensitive and so I don't want it affecting tracks that are record armed and monitoring. Unfortunately, Tape Auto mode isn't enough - this prevents me from monitoring when *not* recording, so I can only monitor when the project is stopped.

I'm looking for a way to have it stop monitoring the input when it comes across media but otherwise allow me to always hear myself.

I'm probably missing your point here, but why not record onto another track?

Yeah, not my point. The controller is routed to multiple tracks which may or may not have recorded items already. It has to be routed due to inability to choose 2/5 available MIDI inputs on a track.
