Default Snapping items to edit cursors

I know this works with the mouse, but what what about instant snapping stuff to the edit cursor ?

For example, I work on dialog a lot, and part of that is replacing lines with alternate takes. Many times, I need to match the position of elements on tracks above or below the one I'm working on. Often I use the snap-to markers for this (called sync points in pt). Pt has commands, in this case modifiers for the grabber cursor/tool that tell it to snap the selected item to the edit cursor. Another modifier combo snaps the items snap-to marker to the edit cursor, making it much easier to match elements.

Just last night I cut music by placing snap-to markers in items that I wanted to line up, sometimes across larger distances. Using the mouse simply isn't always the quickest way, especially when you want to snap a set of items quickly.

I'm not sure there are modifiers left for Reapers item grabbing cursor to pull this off in the same way, but it should would be nice to have to those commands for starters. I could always program a macro that selected the item under the mouse cursor and then use a "Snap start of item to edit cursor" command for example.

I also don't want to keep the SNAP on all the time.

Many times it's way more precise to use such snapping actions too. You position the cursor precisely, find the item you want to put there and hit the action. No need for unecessary mouse travel that could potentially destroy automation on its way over too.

A list of commands I'd find a lot of use for are:

a) "Snap start of item to edit cursor"
b) "Snap end of item to edit cursor"
c) "Snap snap-to marker of item to edit cursor"

d) "Snap start of a copy of the item to edit cursor"
e) "Snap end of a copy of the item to edit cursor"
f) "Snap snap-to marker of a copy of the item to edit cursor"

Comments?

You need to download last sws' extension version (version 1.1.0 Build #122):

1. Snap start/end of item to edit cursor

Look for these two actions:

*SWS: Move selected item(s) left/right edge to edit cursor

2. Snap snap-to marker of item to edit cursor

Use Xenakios' action:

Xenakios Extensions: Move selected items to edit cursor

It will snap to selected item's snap offset always

3. Snap start/end of a copy of the item to edit cursor

Build two macros like:

*Edit ->Copy items
*Items: Paste items/tracks
*SWS: Move selected item(s) left/right edge to edit cursor

4. Snap snap-to marker of a copy of the item to edit cursor

Simply copy item and paste it or build a macro with those 2 actions included.

NOTE: There are some issues with those actions and Ripple Editing/Automation Points. If you have Ripple editing activated then all items will logically snap to edit cursor and for automation the issue is related to "move envelope points with media items", they do not move when running those actions.

MANY THANKS TO SWS FOR INCLUDING THOSE ACTIONS TO HIS EXTENSION AND TO XENAKIOS FOR HIS PREVIOUS ACTION!

Ok. After a short debate and experimentation with Mercados ideas, here it is:

https://stash.reaper.fm/oldsb/126275/...6-commands.zip

You need both Xenakios' extension and SWS' extension.

Snap Left Edge of Item under mouse cursor to Edit Cursor
Snap Right Edge of Item under mouse cursor to Edit Cursor

Snap Left Edge of a COPY of the Item under mouse cursor to Edit Cursor
Snap Right Edge of a COPY of the Item under mouse cursor to Edit Cursor

Snap Item's Snap-Offset(Syncpoint) under mouse cursor to Edit cursor
Snap an Itemcopies's Snap-Offset(Syncpoint) under mouse cursor to Edit cursor

Cockos, this doesn't let you off the hook either. This really ought to be included in the standard distribution of Reaper. Editors of all camps will thank you for it.

Please keep in mind that all automation has to come along with items or their copies. Native implementations of these commands may be the only safe solution to ensure this.

Thanks for moving this.

Hope the macros Mercado and I made are useful to others as well. I chose the keys Q and E with some modifiers to cover the six functions. Remember that you need to use them one-handed, because you're picking the items to be moved with the mouse.
