Video still not working in Reaper ?

At first, sorry, if this is a wrong place to asking help/to report this problem.
I allready wrote about this in another thread and below is a link to that, and I hope that someone can help me(and so many others) with this problem and we could stop doing this continuous and frustrating testing without any working results.(many test-results in that link)

I`m sure that if you(people behind Reaper/Cockos) can make that video-monitoring work, there`s lots of people waiting, who will pay the license for Reaper to have it as their main tool.

I suggest(if it`s possible) that maybe it would be best/easier to everyone, if there were couple(for mac/ntsc and for pc/pal users) of working video-formats and simple instructions for video specs (like format, compression, keyframes, framerate, aspect ratio, resolution, needed codec for playback max.file size, etc.)

I use a PC and Windows SP3 (more info in that link above)

I cannot even import any type of video (avi, mov, mp4, wmv) - get 'error importing media' message every time I try.

I'd *really* like for this to work - right now editing sountracks in Reaper is like stabbing in the dark.

Yep, I'm actually currently rewriting the video support code so better support is coming up in the very near future.

This should currently work. Could you play these files in Windows Media Player? If not, try installing the latest ffdshow from http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

Christophe, did you see those example videos we posted about how video needs to work ?

Well, most of that behaviour is expected to work that well only with non-GOP video. This is video without Groups Of Pictures, such as single-frame compressor like DV, MotionJPeg and PhotoJPeg. The entire post production industry works by and large with Quicktime video, usually with the three codecs mentioned above.

The goal must be to provide the stuff we illustrated in the posts and videos.

Thanks for the effort. All the video people are watching out for this.

Hi Christophe:

All videos play back fine in Windows Media Player / Apple Quicktime, as well as inside of Sibelius. But I still can't open them in Reaper, even after installing the ffshow software. I use the menu Insert > Media File, switch from "All Supported Media Files" to "All Files", and then point to the avi / mov / wmv / mp4 file. "Reaper Error / Error opening media" is all I get.

I am probably very slow, but am I missing something?

ps I am on a windows 64 bit vista ultimate system, by the way; not sure if that makes any difference.

Are you using the 64 bit version of Reaper? It could be your video codecs are 32 bit DLLs and thus perhaps can't interoperate with the 64 bit Reaper app.

I am in fact.

It does work with Sibelius but that is 32 bit software.

Christophe, if you could develop something that would make it work with 64 bit Reaper, you'd be my hero!

Actually, you could just install the 64 bit version of ffdshow and that should make your videos work in 64 bit Reaper. Try this version:

Thanks Christophe - I tried that but it still doesn work. "Error opening media".

By contrast, I am able to open mov files in the 32 bit version - although it takes very long and playback is poor (stuttering, video is frozen).

Having the same exact issue here. Also installed the x64 ffdshow to no avail. Any news on getting video to work in Reaperx64?

Update / bump: video still doesn't work in 64 bit mode of Reaper (does work in 32 bit mode). I installed both the 32 and the 64 bit versions of ffdshow.

If anyone has any tips I would be very grateful.

Update 4/21: after downloading and installing the pre release version 3.41 version 13, I am happy to report that video now works in Reaper. I haven't tested all the formats but mov works and that is the most important one for me.

wmv (windows media file)

No movie format seems to work. The dropdown menu 'all supported media files' only shows audio file formats (wav, aif, etc).

All these can be imported without trouble in the 32 bit version.

Make sure you drop the ffmpeg dll's in your reaper directory.

That said, video is still not working on my Reaper64. Movies load properly but it hangs on playback and the audio is choppy. Works better in 32 bit for me, but need 64 bit.

Update: with longer movies (+10 minutes) the video frame freezes on one frame while the soundtrack keeps rolling. By contrast, shorter movies (couple of minutes max) this does not seem to occur. This happens with both MP4 and mov (Quicktime) movie formats.

Also, with MP4 files, there is a distinct crackling sound in the soundtrack.

So -- if these two issues could be worked on, I'd be very grateful.

I'm having an issue with Reaper 3.52-64 bit where the video freezes or freezes/jumps forward/freezes though the audio plays fine.

- 2 .mov files that are under two minutes in length and 70-80 megs in size. They run fine in Reaper 32 bit.

- a large .avi file that is almost 700 meg in size. Freezes in 64 bit and doesn't play at all in 32 bit.

A 30 meg .mpg file runs fine in both 32 & 64 bit.

I've found a workaround for working with video in Reaper 64 bit: run Reaper 32 bit in ReWire slave mode, and load the video in Reaper 32 bit.

That provides for smooth playback and keeps everything in sync. The only drawback is that the video window 'disappears' when you work in Reaper 64 but I believe there are 'always on top' program that will force the window to stay on top.

So until video is fully natively supported in 64 bit, this seems to be a good temporary solution.

Am new to this (event though I remember working with video some times ago and not having these issues), but I am just starting a rather long video project and am having weird issues (and actually can't work because of them, which will very soon become a very big issue).

- Video format is MPEG-2
- Running Reaper 3.52
- Video sometimes sometimes freezes on both reaper 32&64. sound is OK. video gets unstuck after several seconds. This occurs more consistently when seeking while playing.
- When viewing the video and looking for a transition, I get a video transition say at: 41'00". When seeking more accurately, and starting playback a few second before, I get the same transition at 41'06". Oh, and VLC gets the same transition after 42'... Both report the same total video length.
- when stopped and moving the working marker/cursor, video is not always updated.

Additionaly, as a temporary workaround, would anyone know of a format that works fine (more or less)? I'll just convert my video to start working with

For info I found that re-encoding the video in H.264 made the whole thing work properly.

I can scrub, image times are now coherent between original and converted videos played in VLC, and converted video played in Reaper... Conversion was made through MediaCoder, I tested the whole thing with Reaper x64 (win7x64).

[note: Reaper hangs on exit though and need to be force-closed. Not a big issue, but counts as an additional bug.] This somehow disapeared. Probably not video linked then.

To add to my previous posts: video playback works, but one thing that is bothering me is that the video window on Reaper slave is black except when the master Reaper file is playing back.

So, for example, when I am nudging the vertical back and forth, I see a black screen.

That is cumbersome when you are writing music to picture. The picture should be on all the time, and you should be able to go back and forth frame by frame. There has got to be a complete lock of movie and music / Reaper file, 100% of the time.

So, if that can be added, I'd be very happy.

ps I'd be happier still if that were possible running a video natively in Reaper 64 bit.

In the pre release for reaper 3.6 any change to an item is now updated in the video window in real time. Very powerful. Maybe it will also fix running it within one reaper.

Has this problem been addressed yet? I have a crackling MP4 video file in Reaper x64. This workaround seems to get rid of the crackling, but, like another poster mentioned, there's no ability to scrub or view the frame at the cursor. Is there another method? Does re-encoding to another container type help?

Not asfar as I know - I am still using the ReWire workaround (or, if possible, Reaper 32 bit which has none of these issues).

I am not sure that it is a Reaper issue, rather than an issue related to the particular video format. I am not technically savvy enough with video formats I'm afraid - though I am pretty sure that there must be a solution. For sure I know that filmmakers / editors are all looking to 64 bit applications and last year Smoke was announced as 64 bit compatible for the mac (it was demoed at the SF Supermeet, the meeting of Final Cut Pro users).
