Default Windows 7 Question about Startup?

Hi all,

If I have any USB backup drives plugged in when I start the computer, it's loading the drives which causes it to take a lot longer to start up.

Is there a way I can make it so it doesn't do that? I've got two large USB drives hooked up and it loads both of them and brings up there corresponding folders.

I've got an older computer with Win-7, and this doesn't seem to happen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, how often do you start up? I never power down.

As far as your sitch specifically maybe you could change a boot setting to bypass USB drives? Not sure if that's what may help you.

See if you can adjust auto play settings. If you have previously configured it (which is easy to do without even realizing it), it may try to open the drive in explorer everytime it is connected.

Thanks Serenitynow, I did a little searching but couldn't find anything for this. I'll try again later.

Thanks Karbo, I thought you hit the nail on the head but the AutoPlay settings don't quite do it either.

With the "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" checked it takes close to 45 seconds for the computer to boot. With it unchecked it takes about 35 seconds. Unfortunately, there's no separate settings for USB.

However, if I boot the computer without any of the USB drive plugged in, it only takes about 20 seconds for the computer to boot.

I had this issue and it turned out that the computer was trying to find a boot record on all attached drives, not just my main hard drive. This additional scanning was taking over a minute :-&

You should be able to tell the computer not to try to boot from USB drives in the BIOS.

Thanks ambiguation, it actually turned out to be a BIOS setting as well as the AutoPlay.

There is a Fast Boot setting in the BIOS the was disabled and that's what was causing the computer to take longer to load.

It's the AutoPlay that makes the drives folders show up at the start up.

Thanks my friends, This is SOLVED.
