Default PA bx_consoles vs Reaper

(Moved from Compatibility forum)
Also reported to Plugin Alliance support!

I have been using VST3 BX and PA plugins on Win 10 x64 with Reaper x64 (versions up to and including the most current 5.92) with no issues. I have bx_console_E bx_console_G purchased and installed. I also recently installed trials of bx_console_4000_E and bx_console_4000_G.

After using the most current Installation Manager to update all my PA and BX plugins, plus install the two 4000 console trials, all Reaper sessions that include ANY bx_console CRASH at startup. The sessions begin to load but ALWAYS crash Reaper with errors similar to the below:

an 'Application Error" like: (faulting module is always one of the bx_console items)
Faulting application name: reaper.exe, version: 5.9.2.0, time stamp: 0x5b2adfae

Update....

Waves support remote accessed my computer, uninstalled Waves V10, and installed Waves 9.92. According to them, this is a pretty common fix right now and there are no technical differences between V9.92 and V10. Of course we did "Clear Cache and Rescan" and even the Waves Tech Support guy acknowledged this is required with Reaper and Waves.

I am still banging my head on the issue, using a session that has the new PA SSL Console 4000 E and SSL Console 4000 G VST3 plugins. Crash after crash with frustrating periods where I'll actually get the session to load and be useable 4-5-6 times, then crash after crash.

I'm beginning to suspect something about the RPP file itself may be corrupt in a really subtle way. Problem is this is my project template file with about 200 empty tracks everything prerouted the way I like it and plugins inserted but offline initially so I can do a good balance and pan mix before introducing plugins. If I open the RPP in safe mode with all plugins offline, yes it opens fine. Weirdly, if I remove the PA bx_console_4000 VST3 files from the plugin path, it opens fine, or if I remove the WaveShells from the plugin path, it opens fine.

I did system, memory, and disk diagnostics but all shows 100% functional no errors.

I'm getting zero mixing done trying to solve this.

I was on 5.92 and did upgrade to 5.93. Same thing happens. Irritatingly PA support claims there are no other users reporting issues with the new SSL 4000 console plugins in Reaper so I have to assume this is my problem.

Sigh.

Would you please let me know if you ever get to the bottom of this?

I'm seeing a lot of freezes and crashes lately that I've never seen before. Some quite similar to what you are describing.

If I offline all my fx, everything works fine, but the more I bring back online, the more likely it will freeze. Unfortunately, not always, so it's next to impossible to find out which ones are the culprits.

I spent a lot of time substituting all my vst3 fx with their vst2 counterparts. And whilst I'm thinking the project loads a lot quicker now (interesting!), the crashes remain.

Regards

So I was thinking about the fact that the Waves support guy on call with me the other day seemed surprised I was using StudioRack but have no SoundGrid devices. That got me thinking since StudioRack is in an old WavesShell 9.7, to try and remove it from the session.

So I got to a point where I could disable ONLY StudioRack leaving all other plugins in place in my session.

Like magic I could load session after session albeit with warnings about missing StudioRack plugins. Anecdotally load times seemed a bit quicker as well. I could also add the new BX SSL 4000 E and G Consoles and the slightly older BX Console E and Console G plugins.

I am cautiously optimistic and will attempt to load and do a rough mix tonight using BX SSL 4000 E consoles and NO StudioRacks!

Thanks a lot for getting back to me about this.
Glad you seem to be up and running again. Doubly glad, so am I. Seems it wasn't related to your problem, but the symptoms looked similar.

Have a nice weekend!

Ehhhh problem kept continuing since my last report. It would be weird... some days and some projects would open fine, but other attempts to open even the same project would crash at the end right before "Loading Project Complete" dialog is presented. I avoided updated plugins but did routine Reaper updates until now on 5.961.

I just dealt with the problem the last several months by simply taking 3-4-5 tries to open a project would usually bring it up.

I note that PA updated ALL their plugins within the last few days. I updated my PA plugins and... am cautiously optimistic something about their VST2/3 framework changed because I can open project after project now in Reaper 5.961.

So I'm really pleased to report that the general PA update did in fact seem to correct my problem with Brainworx BX_console plugins crashing Reaper. I've run multiple sessions in 5.961 and 5.962 and they open as expected again and again.

I do note reviewing the PA change logs for their recent "4.7" update they 'Fixed potential crashes in Cubase and other VST2 / VST3 DAWs' This may have also done the trick in my case.

Anyways I'm just happy to be back at it without worrying about crashing sessions!
