Default New Song - Road Trip

Just came back from a nice little road trip, and got inspired to write a bit of music that goes on a trip. I broke out my mandolin and banjo for a couple of unusual sounding solos in the middle section.

I'm playing bass, drums, guitars, mandolin, banjo, Rhodes piano, and a C3 Hammond organ. All recorded and produced with REAPER for Linux.

I liked it too, don't hear banjo or mandolin often enough these days

Thanks Asharin.

I don't approach folk instruments like you are supposed to with them, but I sure have fun playing them.

Really liked the role the banjo played in this.

As for overall EQ balancing, maybe it would be good to turn the the high frequencies down a little bit, the hi-hat, just to get a more balanced mix overall.

Nice track love the guitar tone and feel - grabs you right away. The chorus was a very slight let down - the gaps there left something missing. They were great for dynamics but did not build up to the point I expected. Maybe add some keyboard part of layer there - maybe an organ with a rotary speaker effect just sustained?

Mix is great to me - only the bass and kick to me could use a boost.

Keep or sweep, but keep it up!

Thanks guys. My last few musical productions have been mostly geared toward trying to get my acoustic drums to sit nice in a mix.

I suspect there is a peak in the higher frequency response of the overheads I'm using that stick the hi-hat out. They are a matched pair of cheep Audio Technica AT2020s.

I've been trying out alternate configurations for the overheads, and have them right now in a hybrid RecorderMan / Coincident Pair configuration. I think I'm ultimately going to end up with higher mics in a dual-spaced configuration, which may help with the clacky hi-hat sound.

Thanks for all the input guys.

That sounds right, yes.

Ran your mix through 'Ozone master assistant' just as an extra test.
Not that this is a perfect way to measure things of course because a lot of it comes down to taste, but they did a great job with the algorithm and it tends to give you a surprisingly qualified hint pertaining to the overall frequency balance, especially if you already suspect an issue, and indeed it suggested that the hi-hat frequencies be turned down pretty drastically.

What frequencies, or range was it suggesting?

Here you can see it, it also suggests a boost to give more body to the sound:

Again it's important to say that it's never enough to go by software suggestion alone.
The audio just left that impression by listening, so had to run it through to see out of interest if Ozone agreed, and the software confirmed that initial impression.

It's also fun to run commercial mixes through the algorithm. Sometimes it makes suggestions, but they are usually pretty subtle.

Very cool. Thanks for the screen shot. So the curve it's displaying is what it thinks is needed then? Rolling off 2db @ 20k using a slope that begins at 1k, and the bump between 400 and 1k.

I'll try some EQ curves based on the Ozone screen grab and see what happens. Thanks again for taking the time to grab and upload the image.

Cool, no problem.

And yes that's correct; it displays the changes it wants you to make.

You can also run it through something like Waves LinMB and use the "Electro mastering preset" (A preset used a lot by Greg Wells and others)....simply pull down the mastering threshold and you can see that it wants you do do the same thing Ozone does, it's trying to pull down that same range.

You will probably get the best result by doing it in the mixing stage rather than on your overall master.

You could turn down the hat / overhead, emphasize the meat a bit in the bass and other instruments, and automate the crashes on your overhead track up just a little bit only when they hit if you want them still quite loud in the mix.
