Default selecting items

I sometimes delete items by accident. Here is why it happens.

I work on an item. I make it shorter for example. Thats why this first item is selected.
Now i want to delete the next item. i select it and delete it. but i deleted both. the second one and the first one. the first one by accident, because i selected the second item in the botom half....it seems that selecting in the bottom half make me selecting multiple items without pressing shift or option. but i dont want that bottom half thing...is it something i can turn off?

thanks

thomas

You can change your mouse modifier so that selecting the bottom half is the same as selecting the top half and deselects everything else and only selects what you clicked on
