I don't mind the controls of EpicVerb, bringing my list back to a few gives me the time to learn really working with it. It does indeed sounds great.

Agreed, I had to choose between Omniverb and SH1-reverb for something you can just slam on a channel without taxing the CPU. Breebaard's stuff is great but SH1-reverb uses even less CPU and has a bit simpler controls. Quite easy to dial in something.

Same experience here... and not a really smooth reverb-tail.

SIR1 is free... and I have it. But I didn't take it into account as I have much more reverb impulse sets then the amount of reverb plugins I tested here.
I see SIR1 (or another impulse player, have to test some I think) as another tool (as you can load other impulses besides 'reverb'). It is in my arsenal but it's certainly not the first thing I go for when I need reverb
... although there are some really jummie sounding reverb impulses floating around on the net

I was just playing around with StepBeater tonight, had it lying around for a while already. It's a very nice little stepsequencer plugin. Works great in Reaper and the most usefull feature is that when you have build a good sounding sequence or drum pattern with it, you can just drag it out of StepBeater and into a Reaper track as a midi-item.
I love this thing already after just playing with it for a little while
Added to the list in the OP.

That sfz+ Sampler looks great!! I'm gonna start using that for sure. I already use z3ta, and it looks the same. I've always struggled with samplers... i love the ones in Reason, but outside of that I havn't found an easy, low CPU sampler. I hate shortcircuit & kontakt is a CPU hog. sfz+ looks dope!

you forgot reverberate LE!
http://www.liquidsonics.com/software.htm
excellent free convolution reverb. zero latency.
i agree that epicverb sounds beautiful but i had too many problems with it - occassional crashes, sometimes the gui wouldn't appear or would take ages to load and things generally got worse the more instances i had in a project. that was quite a long time ago now though so the dev may have fixed a few problems now. the only reverb plugs in my folder now - ambience (i was lucky enough to get the nagfree version), reverberate LE and both the PSP freebies - pianoverb and springverb (only available from a CM cover disc). takes care of pretty much everything.
my favourite freeware vendors are probably voxengo and jeroen breebaart. all their plugs seem to be very well coded - never experienced any problems at all. oh and of course the digitalfishphones package (blockfish, spitfish and floorfish).
my absolute favourite freebie of all time...
http://www.ohmforce.com/ViewProduct.do?p=Frohmage
frohmage by ohmforce - couldn't live without it. it sits somewhere in the plugin chain on many, many tracks in my projects.

It's worth mentioning that room machine, besides what you have already discovered on drums and vocals, is possible the best way to achieve that roomy Brian May guitar sound. That's what I usually use that one for.
FYI.

You can always put some midi-plugin after it to take care of that. I use it as a sketchpad to quickly whip up something. If I like it I drag it to a reaper-track as midi-item and take it from there.

NuBiLe and SpinnerLE is a kickass combo! I've used LightBag II for organs in the past but this is sooo much better. The seventies vibe really oozes from it. I think I'm going to write some prog and pretend I'm Steve Walsh for a while

BTW NuBiPlus is now also free as the development has stopped.
I liked the Iliadis Efthimia better though.

As far as I know NubiPlus was never released as freeware by the original developer but it's indeed floating around the net for download. But I might be wrong and it has been released into freeware. If so let us know
I'm going to do delays next and I need suggestions. I have most of the usual suspects (Echomania, TAL DubII, Retrodelay, etc.) but the commercial delays that I have are the Lexicon PSP42, PSP84 and OhmBoyz. They are all hard to beat feature-wise so I'm not sure there is free stuff to replace those.

I have that one too but it's a bit too CPU-heavy for my taste. And judging from the presets, NuBiLe feels more like a rock organ than Efthimia.
FTR, I'm not an organ aficionado... maybe Efthimia can do everything NuBiLe can, the above is just my first and maybe not well-founded impression.

Can't be of much help I'm afraid -- since I started using REAPER I don't use anything but ReaDelay. The guy(s) who created Mo Verb have a pretty good one, but I suspect that's donationware as well. Also, I don't really use delays a great deal except for fattening things up.

NubiPlus can be downloaded from vst4free.com (check the organs section). I have another download link somewhere for NubiPlus together with SpinnerPlus but I can't find it right away. When I dig it up I'll post it here.

Just tried NubiPlus and NubiLE side by side. They sound exactly the same and I like the interface of NubiLE better actually. Also LE is a one manual organ while Plus has upper, lower and pedal. Same as why I use ZR1 instead of AZR3.
So I'll stay with NubiLE and SpinnerLE

So I finally came around testing and selecting delay-plugins. I started out with something like 30 plugs so I didn't set up the whole testing process like I did with reverbs. I just eliminated delays one by one based on CPU-load, functionality and sound. A whole lot of them had to go right away simply because there where better options available.
So I settled for:
- Kjaerhus Classic Delay: simple and versatile
- e-phonic RetroDelay: for more modulated fx
- Sweetboy SH-1 delay: again (because of incredible low CPU) to have something to stick anywhere when needed
... and finally ReaDelay for multi-taps
I'll update the OP with download links later on. Next selection to make: EQ.

Sorting out my EQ-plugins proved to be a fairly easy. I just binned most of the parametric equalisers that where all looking the same (and most sounded the same as well). Result; one real good parametric EQ, one 31-band graphic EQ (if ever I need it) and only a few characteristic ones.
This is what I settled for:
- Electri-Q Posihfopit edition: similar to ReaEQ but with loads of additional functionality
- KarmaFX 31-band graphic EQ: you can 'stack' three and get 93 bands
- TAL Ultra Simple EQ: seems very handy for some 'quick fixes'
- BootEQ mk II: very characteristic sound, definitely more than 'just EQ'
- Push Tec: another one that can do some magic to my mix
Again, OP to be edited later on

ooh i like that electri-Q -
cool thread indeed, is nice to benefit from the thorough research done by yourself and others.
i quite like bionic delay btw - you probably ditched it cos the others were better? (which i will try!))
just a q: any granular type effects anyone know about? - something that can at extreme levels manipulate the F*k out of the incoming audio, and not sound awful?
i used grm tools years and years ago and they were ace.

Thanks for the very interesting thread; I wonder if you included DDMF, MeldaProduction and Christian Budde free EQs in your marathon.
Electri-Q is great though a little buggy and unstable in my (aging) tests some months ago.
Thanks,
Mario

I've had some issues just yesterday - terrible plug-in. Had to "recycle" it immediately. I like the concept though. Does anyone know if the payware version is better coded than the (admittedly old) freeware version?

ah. it'll go on my firewalled list first i think! seems to help with terminal issues on other plugs, so am bit more confident using random plugs now.

Instead of Electri-Q you can always use ReaEQ although it doesn't have the build-in filter curves that Electri-Q has. I didn't have any problems with it yet, probably because I have a single-core CPU
As for the mangling stuff, I have several free plugins collected for that as well, will get to testing and selecting soon

I have yet to come around to testing and selecting distortion, cab-emulations and all such stuff. Mind you that I'm not a guitar player so I'm not looking to get that special tone from my axe. So I'm more interested in something with a lot of options like the FrettedSynth stuff.
But as I said, suggestions are welcome and I will look/listen to the SimulAnalog stuff as I know it has quite a good reputation

regarding Freeware Effects : Once I really started looking into all those JS plugins I realised I could de-install 80 % of all the freeware-effects I collected. The JS Effects might not look nice but they get the job done fairly well. Never wanna mis stuff like JS/sweepinglowpass or JS/resonantlowpass any more, so cool stuff.
regarding Freeware Synths :
my favourite ones are iblit/polyiblit and Voyager (Oatmeal you already have)
Also search for soundbanks, especially for voyager there are many out there. if you don't find them, pm me and I send you.
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/366.html
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/577.html
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1768.html
Oh and one effect I don't wanna miss ist TAL DUB II , my go to effect for delay :
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/3353.html
Check out the other TAL stuff, I like their Filter as well.
And dblue Glitch is a must if you need something totally weird effect-wise. Many producers use it, yet it's still freeware.
Another great Organ is ORGANized Trio : http://www.kvraudio.com/get/682.html
I believe one could easily do full productions just with Reaper and freeware, yet I find a lot of payware is very comfortable to use and comes with tons of presets. That's why I buy payware as well.

I saw a similar thing, it was the distortion adding noise even if no signal was fed in input. When I set distortion to zero it vanished.
Also, maybe a spectrum analyzer could shed some light (very low frequency for example)...
