Default Procedure for reporting errors in or ommissions from the User Guide

Coming out of another thread ...

Anybody who comes across errors or inaccuracies in the User Guide, by all means post here if you wish to discuss the issue, but please also be aware that the fastest way to get the problem fixed is to PM me with the information. Please include chapter, section and page reference.

Please also keep in mind that because of the nature of Reaper, with frequent software updates and changes, it often happens that information that is accurate at the time of publication is made inaccurate by subsequent developments.

Thanks everybody for your understanding.

PS to MODS: Might be worth making this thread sticky for while please?

Good idea, I'll add a comment in the preface for the next update ... but I suspect many people won't see it

Small typo on pg46 2:13 Selection and Loops:

2nd Paragraph - "If loop points are linked to times election"
should probably read - "If loop points are linked to time selection"

"Now when you play the project, it will replay over again the area selected for your Loop. This is known as the
Repeat Function. If loop points are linked to times election, the start time, finish time and duration of the selection are also shown on the Transport Bar."

Re: getting the latest version of the user guide on the Reaper website - the site redesign that accompanied the release of Reaper 3.0 seems to have obscured this process a little: the link for the manual is now just to generic "http://www.cockos.com/reaper/manual.php" - it doesn't tell you what version of the PDF you'll get when you click -
it would be good if the release notes for a new version made it more explicit whether it was accompanied by a new version.

Another general point re: screenshots in the manual.
Some of them look a bit "munged".
Some tips of getting nice crisp screenshots:

1. Turn off Window's font anti-aliasing (On WinXP, that means right click on desktop to get Display Properties > Appearance tab > Effects button > and uncheck "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts". (Obviously, this makes things look nicer on a monitor screen, but it just makes screen-grabs blurry)

2. Don't save your screengrabs using lossy JPEG compression, it induces that yucky mottling around text and straight edges. Save them as something lossless (PNG, for instance)

3. I see the user guide is written in MS Word then converted to PDF using Adobe's PDF Maker. In the advanced settings for that, make sure once more that the PDF distillation process isn't applying mungey JPEG compression to graphics - (it's in the Advanced settings > Images > Colour Images > Compression - try setting it to something lossless like ZIP or lossless JPEG2000. If this makes PDF file size too big (what is "too big"?) for the downloadable PDF, then at least make a different "print quality" PDF for Lulu to sell its printed copies from.

(Not wanting to teach anyone to suck eggs, but the above is the way I'd do it

Not at all - I have the exact same sentiments every time I read your manual and discover some marvellous better way of doing things in Reaper!

On page 118 of v3.03C, I think the information concerning the UAD plugins should be further clarified.

Quote:
Anticipative FX processing. This can yield large reductions in CPU usage, but too aggressive a setting can cause pops and crackles on playback. This option should usually be disabled for UAD plug-ins.

Due to the improved changes to the UAD-2 driver architecture the UAD-1 & UAD-2 should be differentiated, per card type, for best performance in REAPER:

UAD-1: For best results, both Synchronous FX & UAD-1 Synchronous modes should be enabled (Anticipative FX disabled and is not recommended)
UAD-2: Compatible with Anticipative FX mode and is recommended for best low latency performance.

Cheers,

Billy Buck

Hello,

I just found that if you click on a link from the initial contents page, everything past about 1.16 takes you to page 35 of the manual.

This could be just a problem with me as I am not running the latest adobe.

the bookmarks work fine though.

Thanks, yes I'm aware of this, and trying to find the cause. Meanwhile there are two ways round this:

1. Click on the page number in the ToC instead of the text. That shoudl work.
2. Display Adobe's bookmarks panel and use that - that works, and is better than jumping back to the ToC in the document all the time as it sits in as separate window.

Default 2.13 Selections and Loops

Page 46, Par 2
First sentence:
Reads..."Now when you play the project, it will replay over again the area selected for your loop."

I'm a newbie, so it took me a few tries to figure it out...

Could you make it read "Now when you click the loop icon in the transport, then play the project, it will replay over again the area selected for your loop." for future newbies?

Bought the hard copy from Lulu. Love it!!

On page 76 there is a misplaced screenshot obscuring part of the text of section 3.22 (UG v3.1)

I have found the following cases where text in the UG (v3.1) is obscured by misplaced screenshots;

page 45 – sections 2.12, 2.13
page 76 – section 3.22
page 83 – section 3.28
page 99 – section 4.8
page 310 – section 16.15
page 338 – section 17.13
page 341 – sections 18.3, 18.4
page 363 – sections 19.13, 19.14, 19.15
page 370 – section 20.3
page 374 – section 20.5
page 378 – section 20.9

Any chance of having the the text of these sections posted until the next version of the UG becomes available (unless of course that will be soon)?

Maybe only sections 2.12, 2.13, 3.22, 3.28 & 4.8 would help a newb like me get through some of the basics. You can only ask.

The UG is great. Well written & very helpful for beginners. Thanks.

I've just sent Justin a corrected version for the download page, if you don't want to wait until he gets time to change the page, you can grab it here:

Ok, I don't know how to send a PM so I'll post this here...

Nicholas, could you add some pencil mode clarifications in the manual (section 6.29)? More specifically:

Clarification 1: Pencil mode creates empty MIDI items when no other items are selected during its use.

Clarification 2: If an item is selected in the project, the pencil mode will create a copy of that item. (I have no clue what happens if multiple items are selected)

Clarification 3 That one got me I thought it was a bug): When cloning a selected item with the pencil mode, the cloned item's contents will start from the place of the *edit cursor* in the project, not necessarily from the beginning of the original item!

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.p...027#post408027

Thanks!

Small correction in A REAPER User Guide v 3.67

Page 46
Section 2.15

Reads:
Tip: To set the loop selection to match a media item, hold Ctrl Shift while you double click on that item.

Should Read:
Tip: To set the loop selection to match a media item, hold Ctrl while you double click on that item.

Thanks for a great guide. PM'd you too.

Default Power Errors?

I'm new to posting to the forum, so pardon me in advance if this is the wrong place to be asking this, but I was wondering where would be the appropriate place to post errors and issues with the book Reaper Power! I did a search but was unable to come up with anything that fit the bill. Wonderful book, by the way. Also, a wonderful User Guide.

Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I believe that "ZL" is zero latency and "Set all" means apply the selected latency settings to all instances in current project?

I'm not sure about LL though.

If anybody can help me out here I'll include it in the next updated version ...

On page 216 of the user guide dealing with cc lane editing, it states

"Hold down Ctrl while dragging to make fine adjustments."

This does not work for pitch bend data and has bee confirmed by Ollie

Default Section 3:16

When I "ensure that Show all takes in lanes (when room) is not selected." and I "make sure that Loop points linked to time selection is not enabled"(unchecked), as directed in 3:16.2 I can't Punch Record or make Reaper look like the screen shot that you've provided. If I enable either one it seems to work. What am I missing?

Default 4.2

In v. 4.30 right clicking on the volume fader in the TCP brings up the "Routing" window for that track and not the "Control" window described and shown in section 4.2 "Volume and Pan Faders".

Make sure a recording input is selected.
Try clicking and dragging along the track background area (instead of the timeline) to make the time selection.
