Default Audio crackling and distorting, only with MIDI editor open (SOLVED)

Dear developers, I'm encountering what I believe is the biggest issue I've ever had with Reaper (I've been a Reaper user since version 3)

Sometimes in some of my latest projects I get audio "crackling" and "distorting" during some passages, but only when I have the midi editor open...the same passage plays back correctly when i close the editor and I just have the tracks window open.

This is really affecting my work and slowing things down, as you can imagine.

I'm on the latest official Reaper release (I never try the pre-releases builds), and using a Mac Pro trashcan 6 core, OSX 10.12.6 , 64 gigs of ram, UA Apollo Twin thunderbolt.

I made a video that describes my issue a lot better than words,

I hope you can help me sort out this problem.

Thanks a lot

All the best
-t

***UPDATE***
Solved by the wonderful support team at Cockos, it was a setting that was unchecked in the "Buffering" section of the Audio options

THANKS REAPER DEVELOPERS YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

If you stumbled on this question recently then it's worth noting that the solution that tusitala mentioned is most likely to enable "Allow on tracks with open MIDI editors" under "FX processing/multiprocessing settings" in Preferences > Audio > Buffering.

As mentioned in this thread:
