Hi @Funkybot

NOTE: X32 on CSI support requires the X32/XAIR/MIDAS firmware to updated to the most recent version.
For the X32 the most recent version is: 4.06

Below is the X32 scene file I use with CSI.
It preconfigures the X32 for OSC messages for use with my X32/CSI support files.

Before anyone starts using using "X32 on CSI", for the first time, this scene file must be loaded into the X32 via USB stick or using the "X32-Edit" program from Behringer X32 downloads.

Please add it to the X32 CSI support files.

Cheers,
Roy

I am sure I saw it some weeks ago, but right now I don't (no device connected).

Seemingly this option is only shown when a device with new firmware is connected.

The next stop on our journey towards auto FX mapping takes us to the SCE24.

Even though this seems very specific, it will teach us a lot about what we need to make auto FX mapping intuitive and effective.

Funkybot, I'll be leaning on you a lot here for your ultra valuable insights.

As if all of us don't already lean on you a lot for the fabulous job you do on the Wiki !!

I think it will be very valuable to come up some additions to the EZFXZone syntax that support the various properties of the SCE24.

Right now, when I look at your SCE24 FX Zone definitions, I see a lot of repetition.

I wonder if we can streamline this by using the new style matrix syntax.

First off, some terminology.

The FP series uses the term "DisplayType", whereas I believe the SCE24 uses "ScreenType".

Let's standardize on "DisplayType".

The FP series uses the term "Line" -- Line1, Line2, etc., whereas I believe the SCE24 uses "Text".

Let's standardize on "Line".

Following that example, let's keep "Bar" for the SCE24.

My first thought is to rewrite the definitions that look like this:

Code:
Property+CellA1_Text2 Text 01 " " 254 254 254 00 00 00
into something more manageable -- where the pattern is repeated for all parameters horizontally:

Code:

CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
and things like this:

Code:
Property+LEDRingA2 Ringstyle 01
Property+LEDRingA2 RingColor 00 255 00 255
Property+LEDRingA2 RingColor 01 00 00 255
Property+LEDRingA2 RingColor 75 255 255 00
Property+LEDRingA2 RingColor 90 255 00 00

maybe something like this:

Code:
LEDRingA| Ring 01 00 #00ff00ff 01 #000000ff 75 #00ffff00 90 #00ff0000
In context:
Code:
	FXParams 9 1 2 3 6 7 0 8
	FXValueWidgets RotaryA|
        FXParamNameDisplays CellA|_Line1 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXParamValueDisplays CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXWidgetRings LEDRingA| Ring 01 00 #00ff00ff 01 #000000ff 75 #00ffff00 90 #00ff0000
Dunno, just some thoughts to start the conversation...

[edit] Rethinking the Ring definition, you often want to change the RingStyle for different parameters, and we should upgrade the terminology from cryptic numbers to phrases, like the FP:

Code:
FXWidgetRingStyles Dot BoostCut Spread Dot Fill Fill // etc.
        FXWidgetRingColors LEDRingA| 00 #00ff00ff 01 #000000ff 75 #00ffff00 90 #00ff0000
And often, in the above case, you might use a common RingColor too:

Code:
FXWidgetRingStyles Dot BoostCut Spread Dot Fill Fill // etc.
        FXWidgetRingColors LEDRingA| #00ff00ff

I would appreciate it if you could check when convenient, as I don't see it either (no Compact connected and I don't see it with the Mini connected- same editor for both).

The ability to modifiy the messages the device sends and receives in a useful way is really going to make the difference between us pursuing a solution further or dumping the Compact (at least in native mode) and moving on.

I did see and test it with the Compact with newest firmware 1.14 connected (my device is not available right now). There also were others' posts about that being tested at the end of the discussion on Encoder7Bit -> https://forum.cockos.com/showpost.ph...ostcount=19393 .

Firmware see -> https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=P0B3L -> Software -> Firmware and Editor

This all sounds great to me! The SCE-24 is really a tough beast to create fx.zon's for, with no outside editor other than the FX configurator I created and the syntax being difficult and repetitious.

Looking at my current fx.zon's, a single parameter mapping would have 15 lines of syntax (not including the empty rows I'd use to break up the white spice). So this...
Code:
	FXParams 9 1 2 3 6 7 0 8
	FXValueWidgets RotaryA|
        FXParamNameDisplays CellA|_Line1 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXParamValueDisplays CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXWidgetRingStyles Dot
        FXWidgetRingColors LEDRingA| 00 #00ff00ff 01 #000000ff 75 #00ffff00 90 #00ff0000
...Would've required at least 120 lines of text using the Classic FX Zone style on the SCE-24.

That said, my "go-to" setup was...
Code:
Line1: FXMenuNameDisplay
Line2: FXParamNameDisplay
Line3: FXParamNameDisplay [for RotaryPush - very frequently custom text like "Push to Reset"]
Line4: FXParamValueDisplay
So if I tried to replace that, I think we'd still want to add:
Code:
	FXParams 9 1 2 3 6 7 0 8
	FXValueWidgets RotaryA|
        FXMenuNameDisplay CellA|_Line1 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXParamNameDisplays CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FixedTextDisplay "" "" "" "" "Push to Reset" "" "" "Push to Reset" CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXParamValueDisplays CellA|_Line4 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXWidgetRingStyles Dot
        FXWidgetRingColors LEDRingA| 00 #00ff00ff 01 #000000ff 75 #00ffff00 90 #00ff0000
...that FixedTextDisplay line is ugly though. Please find a better way to do that! Maybe even this is better:

Code:
	FXParams 9 1 2 3 6 7 0 8
	FXValueWidgets RotaryA|
        FXMenuNameDisplay CellA|_Line1 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXParamNameDisplays CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXParamValueDisplays CellA|_Line4 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
        FXWidgetRingStyles Dot
        FXWidgetRingColors LEDRingA| 00 #00ff00ff 01 #000000ff 75 #00ffff00 90 #00ff0000

FixedTextDisplay CellA5_Line2 "Push To Reset" DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
Reminder on the SCE-24: there's currently an issue where the LEDRing feedback maxes out around 68%. So if it's assigned to an FX Param, and that Param value is around 0.68, the ring will look like the Param value is actually at 1.0. A few people with SCE-24's who have reached out to me have been thrown off by that and are patiently awaiting a fix. Note: I'm not sure if it's a CSI bug or an SCE-24 one. But it's the biggest functional pet peeve for SCE-24 users.

EDIT: thinking about this some more, the "MainDisplays" on the SCE-24 are missing in the .mst/CSI. If they were added, I'd probably do this: MainDisplay1: TrackNameDIsplay, MainDisplay2: FXMenuNameDisplay. And then I don't need FXMenuNameDisplay on Line1.

Perhaps JP can install it and try it out, not much more I can do here.

Thanks, excellent stuff !!

Also, as I sit here staring at the X-Touch Universal and the SCE24, I wonder if it's time we resurrected a concept we tossed around years ago -- local modifiers.

I was thinking about mapping the UAD/Manley Massive Passive, it's a bear.

You can just fit the eight bands of Gain, Frequency and Q on the SCE24.

However, you still have to deal with the low pass and high pass filters, and the overall gain.

Thinking about how one would use this, I decided the low pass should overlay the low mid Frequency when Shift is engaged.

This makes sense since you would likely use the low band and low pass in conjunction, and therefore would want both mapped simultaneously.

Similarly, I decided the high pass should overlay the high mid Frequency when Shift (or maybe even another modifier) is engaged.

However, I wouldn't want to mess up the X-Touch operation with these modifiers.

Now, this concept only makes sense with 2 fairly sophisticated hardware units, where modifiers are available on both.

So how should we approach this ?

First thought was to add something to the .mst, since we've been playing around there recently.

Then I thought, that violates our Page semantics, where you can have completely different characteristics on different Pages.

As usual, we don't want to overwhelm newbies with choices that apply to the less trodden configuration path, so that led me to:

Code:
    FollowTCP
    NoSynchPages
    UseScrollLink
the settings that folks can elicit by manually modifying CSI.ini.

We certainly don't want to lose the Global modifiers, they are great for Extenders and such, so that would be the default behaviour.

So, what do you think of adding a parameter, this would only be available by hand modifying CSI.ini.

You could set up your surfaces in the normal way (either by GUI or hand editing), and then override an entry like so:

Code:
Page "HomePage"
"XTouch Universal" 8 0 "X-Touch.mst" "X-Touch"
"SCE24" 0 0 "SCE24.mst" "SCE24"

Code:
Page "HomePage"
"XTouch Universal" 8 0 "X-Touch.mst" "X-Touch"
LocalModifiers "SCE24" 0 0 "SCE24.mst" "SCE24"
This says, on this Page, the SCE24 opts out of Global modifiers, and uses local modifiers instead.

What do you think ?

Great idea! That’s always been my beef with modifiers on the C4- that it affected every surface, where the modifiers were being used for completely different reasons.

Not sure if I'd be alone in this, but I'm really just a simple Caveman Lawyer, and I never really change the display types, ring colors, widget types...maybe I should to really take advantage of the surface's extended features...but honestly, it's been such a hassle to program that it's not worth the effort. I'm a "find one thing that works and stick with it" kind of guy when it comes to the SCE-24.

Where am I going with this? Would it be possible to set defaults and further eliminate the repetition? Define a single default DisplayType for Line1, Line2, Line3, Line4, one RingType, one set of RingColors, then done. Just thinking out loud.

Also, should we be utilizing "WidgetMode" for the SCE-24? That was introduced for MCU and FaderPort surfaces, and may make sense to leverage here too. I don't think WidgetMode has been incorporated into EZFXZones yet so it may make sense to think about adding that as part of this effort and trying to standardize the display controls across various surfaces to use WidgetMode.

Yup, thought of using WidgetMode, but then you would have constructs like this:

Code:
WidgetMode CellA|_Line2 DisplayType 01 #00ffffff #00000000
WidgetMode LEDRingA| RingStyles Dot BoostCut Spread Dot Fill Fill // etc.
WidgetMode LEDRingA| RingColors #00ff00ff
It just seemed more direct without it.

But maybe it's more clear and consistent, not really sure, thoughts ?

As far as the complexity, totally get that, Luis will tell you, I was always pushing for more simplicity in the displays

Let's see what we can do to continue that drive, maybe with some interim definitions, as you say, perhaps something like the Widget Class approach we used for acceleration.

When you use sends mode do hardware sends show up also, or only track sends?

Only Track Sends right now, but we should add Hardware Sends, first time I recall anyone asking for it - shows how much we are ITB these days

I'll add it to the feature request list.

Seems more direct without it.

At a few points, I actually contemplated removing the extra display types from the .mst and simplifying the names. I appreciate what Luis was going for with the SCE-24, but the additional display options are not worth the complexity IMO. Especially since Reaper+CSI is the only protocol that currently supports it in the first place.

I still get lost in the .mst with the 10 different text lines for each cell. If it wasn't for fear of breaking things I don't fully understand, I would've simplified the .mst and display types.

Maybe an out there idea, but would it be possible to simplify the SCE-24 and settle on one display-type/simplified .mst so it behaves and looks a little more like the FaderPort from a syntax perspective? Note: I already think EZFXZones as proposed would allow for the device to be used as Luis intended, but I think the practical reality will be that very few people will actually utilize that way.

Example: maybe just land on the DisplayType with 3 lines of text and a bar, then just have widget modes for the bar type and maybe LED ring colors.

Truth be told, and Luis and I have discussed this, somewhere down the road I'd like to recode the SCE24 firmware with just such simplicity in mind, maybe a few different DisplayTypes like the FP, but nowhere near what there is now.

That would be great IMO! It's great that there's this surface out there that offers all of this flexibility, but considering there are only a few users and the syntax is so complicated, all of those extra screen types don't actually add any value when 0 people are using them. So the added screen types become a kind of value-detractor. I'd love to simplify this.

And if we're using LED Rings as value Bars, like I've been doing, I'm not even sure we actually need a bar in the display.

Can the SCE-24 displays currently follow track colors? I never played around with that but that would be a nice FR if it doesn't exist. And if it already does, just give me a clue as to the syntax for setting that up.

Doesn't currently do Track Colors.

Thanks for the up vote in simplification.

Another vote for simplification of the SCE24 syntax from someone who doesn't use it enough because it's so time consuming to set up!

And another vote for sorting out the LED rings and documenting how to use them.

Thanks

…and you might be able to increase the font size for your four lines of text.
Though I don’t have a dog in this race, I’d be inclined to start with four lines of text(rotary function and value, push function and value) and a single color LED ring. That’s enough to communicate the function of each control. Perhaps this could be set up for the whole Zone, leaving users more able to fill in the parameter details for the individual controls.

I'm wondering if we can even reduce it to three.

The first line could be for the push function and value, say, for a Neve 88RS:

Code:
    Threshold 0
Code:
    Threshold -40
The text and colour could change, pretty strong visual feedback.

That means the fonts could be even larger.

I think there's probably some diminishing returns with font sizes. You definitely don't want them tiny, but too big and you start dealing with fewer characters that fit within the width. There's certainly a Goldilocks range in there though.

I always loved the Eucon displays on the Mix. Good size, clear, easy to read.

Yup, agree 100% with everything you said, including the EuCon Mix displays !

Just another followup on fonts and colour.

When Luis and I were discussing the SCE24, I was always pushing for full RGB.

I still think that was right overall, but I think a rewrite of the firmware should take into account what foreground and background colours really hit it out of the park, and restrict the choices to those combos.

The superb yellow on black used on the Mix is a good example.

Yes agree. I’d even be good if the background color was always black and only the foreground color changed for the OLED displays and 8 OLED buttons. But if the background could change and the text still clear then great! Then I think the LED buttons could be full RGB. No text on those to worry about. They could even be made to work to support track colors like the select buttons on the Faderport.

Yup, although the LED button Track colouring would only be applicable when you were in Sends/Receives modes, etc., where there is a Channel/Track context.

All good, I think there is a tremendous amount to work with on the SCE24 !!

Look forward to moving towards its full potential !!

What do you think about case, should there be upper and lower ?

I do appreciate that you both want to make the absolute best of the SCE24, but i think you should maybe approach the development from a different angle.

I think it's fairly clear that no-one is going to be producing editor software for this device in the short term. Therefore, I think that rather than develop a CSI solution based on the capabilities of the device (which are extensive, no doubt), you should work toward a solution that is the easiest to program for the average user that just wants to map some of their plugins to the surface and has to use a text editor to do it.

Don't get bogged down in colors and text variants. Decide on the best background color, text color, text size, number of lines and ring color and use that as a basis to move forward with the important stuff that really affects usability - how much work is it for the user to assign parameters to controls and displays in the text file. How easy is it to control acceleration and steps?

Sure, there will be people who want to edit the screen and LED colors, probably down to the single LED level. This isn't the time to pander to them.

You need to prove that the SCE24 is a robust, dependable plugin controller (for this is what the vast majority of its customers will want to use it for) and that plugins can be mapped to it with relatively little pain or danger of insanity.

I think .mst and .zon level defaults could go a long way here, along with some nice templates into which users can drop names and parameters and get some encouragingly quick results.

As I said before, I'm not an SCE24 user, but if I was thinking about becoming one, the stuff outlined above is what would be important to me.

How do I update firmware? I can’t find anything for the Compact? It’s ridiculous that it doesn’t even seem to be on their website etc..

There is a video for the normal x-touch but not the compact.

Download the editor software and install it from there. Then you'll be set up to use the editor to see if any of the new options help us to get any further. It's really the button indicators that are the problem, so I'm afraid I don't hold out a great deal of help.

You mentioned in another post that you only really use this with Pro-Q3. Why not use ReaLearn?

I have the editor and firmware is greyed out? I have the new firmware file in the same directory as well?

As for ReLearn I don’t believe the Compact works in Reaper in standard mode only mcu, but I’d have to double check that.

I did originally use ReLearn and ran into lots of limitations that I can’t recall off the top of my head. Otherwise I wouldn’t have started looking for something else etc.

I use the compact for proq3, volume automation, balance etc, but it annoys me I have to use a mouse to select plugins for them to pop open.

I’d love to be able to select a track (I can do that on the compact), scroll through the plugins on that track (can’t do this), open the plugin with a button on the xtouch (can’t do this), then edit the plugin settings (I can do this).

By can’t I mean literally that I don’t know how and not “it isn’t possible”.

Plus if I didn’t use CSI what would I do without you 😃😘

Can you connect to the Compact via the editor?

No probs, as long as you've considered the alternatives.

We're on the same page.

The current design of the firmware uses SysEx for almost everything.

In redesigning the firmware, I want to simplify things as much as possible.

I want to use regular 3 byte messages (the ones we're all totally familiar with in the .mst) wherever it's feasible.

The device has limited memory.

For instance, right now you send a big long SysEx message with, among other things, cell number, line number, display type, text foreground, background, the actual text itself, etc.

That means, other than the temporary input buffer for said message, no memory is required.

If we break things up to make it easier for the user, we have to store, say for instance, the display type, for all 24 cells.

Another example is colour.

Right now every element allows for full RGB.

The reality is, not all combinations of foreground and background actually look good, or even work well together to convey information.

So, if we can reduce the colour combinations to, say 256, we can store that info in one byte (plus a small common lookup table to get the RGB values), meaning 24 bytes for all the cells as opposed to 3 bytes for foreground, 3 bytes for background, for 24 cells, 144 bytes in total, instead of 24.

That's how tight things are, saving 120 bytes is important

That and other considerations means that we have to at least think a little bit about the overall design, colours, fonts etc., to ensure that what we want to do will fit in the very limited memory -- we are talking kilobytes not meg here

So, I agree 100% with your sentiment, but the extremely cramped quarters require that we at least touch on these other things as we proceed to simplify everything.

I can connect via the editor, or at least I think I can, I’m not sure how I can verify that? It does show up the editor though so I guess that’s enough haha!

Agree. That's basically where I'd like to see this go. There will be some things that need accounting for like color, but I'm sure we could build good defaults, then have color support be no more difficult than it is for the FaderPort, MIDI Fighter Twister, or an OSC device. I'm willing to give up a LOT of the current-state flexibility for simplicity. Even if it means binning the hundreds of .zon's I've created for it so far.

Just read Geoff's response and sounds like he's thinking similarly.

Default How to code rotary push to center pan

Hi all,

I feel as though this is a fairly basic question so I'm slightly embarrassed to ask, but I've been trying to figure it out on my own using the wiki for a while and to no avail...

How can I code the rotary for each track on my UF8 surface to center the pan when pushed? I attempted a few things, including:

RotaryPush| ToggleMCUTrackPanWidth

It didn't seem to do the trick though.

Thanks!
