Default Experiencing Audio dropouts - Mac OS / Reaper / XR18 Interface over USB

Hi All,

I am experiencing audio dropouts on Mac OS using Reaper and my XR18 audio interface over USB.

The only thing that resolves the issue is restarting my iMac.

My XR18 audio interface firmware is up-to-date.

There are no XR18 Mac OS drivers on the Behringer site to download, Only Windows drivers. So I assume there are no Mac OS drivers to update.

My late 2009 27" iMac is running Yosemite v10.10.5.

I've never had audio dropout issues with this computer.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!
Chris

The XR18 has no dedicated audio drivers for OSX and uses it's Core Audio.

But Core Audio in Yosemite was so flawed, that some people downgraded to Mavericks ... I found such reports about OSX 10.10.2 in combination with Logic.

I don't know, if it was completely fixed in 10.10.5 ... maybe upgrade to 10.10.6, which was the most stable Yosemite version from my personal experience.

I remember, that I had similar issues with my old Tascam US-122MkII, when I got my Maccbook Pro with OSX 10.10.3 ... Core Audio was a mess and only Tascam's proprietary driver worked without latency issues, though Core Audio was advertized as a working alternative.

I never tried Core Audio again and currently use 10.11.6 ... maybe I should try Core Audio again out of curiosity

PS: It seems that the Core Audio issues with external USB audio devices still exist in El Capitan, at least 10.11.5, because I found a discussion about it in the Apple forums and furthermore Native Instruments have an article in their knowledgebase warning about such issues in OSX 10.9-10.11

I don't know, if it's finally fixed in Sierra.

PS: As a workaround you can reload / restart the Core Audio service instead of rebooting:

Hi @Aymara, thanks for your replies. Very helpful.
For now, I will try the reload / restart of the Core Audio services.
When I can, I will update my Yosemite version too.
Thanks again!

Hi again,

there is something more, that's worth to be checked:

For my Tascam interface there is a Reaper setting, that I need to avoid latency issues. Check if the setting Options->Preferences->Audio->Device->"Ignore running change notifications (may be required for some devices)" makes any difference.

Furthermore I recommend using Reaper 64 Bit and 64bit plugins. Most 32bit plugins will be backward compatible in Reaper.

Last thing worth noting is, that a few systems have latency problems, when WiFi is switched on. So it's worth checking, if the Behringer's LAN mode makes any difference.

Oh, and use the tip from the Behringer forum to check for CPU hogs, e.g. a plugin (VST / AU), that consumes too much CPU ... btw, sometimes VST runs better than AU, in case a plugin has both versions.
