Default Anybody want to take a crack at mixing my song (rock)?

Hello All,

I've mixed this song about as far as I can. I'm still learning how to get things mixed properly, and I think I've gone about as far as I can go. I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in getting this song tightened up a bit. I have all the stems ready to be exported...I just need someone with more experience to get this song where it needs to be. I'm willing to pay you for your time and expertise

Link to demo:
https://andrewreece.bandcamp.com/track/paranoid-demo

Link to individual stems (now with individual drum tracks) + master mix:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/eu5kze792p...TEMS2.rar?dl=0

Thank you for your time, and happy new year!

I'm no pro but I'd love to give it a go.
Why not make the stems available to anyone who wants to give it a shot?

Cool.

In the mean time, do you have any particular stipulations? eg. "No drum samples to be used".

Any tunes you'd like to link to that would give an idea of the sound you're looking for?

Any particular time deadlines?

Make sure the volume level of your stems/tracks are WAYYYY down, -18 db if possible. Your demo is like a sausage, almost everything is clipped.

I dont really have any stipulations. I just know that I'm at my limit for what I'm able to do with the mix. I have to use headphones since I dont have any monitors, so I think thats part of the problem. Just looking to beef up the sound and get everything sitting nicely. I feel like I've gotten halfway there...but theres still a long way to go!

Everything is uploaded! No stipulations. Just trying to get the mix to sound cleaner and give everything some breathing room.

Also, the tracks are named accordingly and are "zero'd out", so everything should pop into a reaper project file nicely.

Ya know what? I would love to have the mix sound like some early Foo Fighters (think "All My Life" or Times Like These"). Just an idea of how I would imagine this song sounding.

Hey Andy:

I gave the stems a listen and they sound pretty good as is. Some impressive performances and a cool song.

Please forgive my curiosity, but someone has already done a fair bit of processing on them, so I'm wondering what we're listening to. Were the effects "printed" as the tracks were recorded or did you do all of that in post?

Also wondering if the drums are real or samples. Not that it really matters as they sound pretty good to my ears. However, I suspect most "mixers" would want access to the original drum stems as well.

At any rate, I expect you'll get some pretty good submissions from forumites and I continue to poke away at my own mix.

Happy New Year!

Hey Dug Dog! First, thanks for the kind words on the performance.

You are correct, the tracks already had the FX printed on them...I didnt even think of that when I exported them. I think its most prominent on the vocal tracks. The instruments just had some light EQ, and the lead guitar had a light delay tossed in.

The drums were programmed with Steven Slate Drums. This might be a great question for you: how do I break down the master MIDI drum track to individual tracks (i.e., snare, toms, cymbals, kick drum...etc). I can mix those instruments in the Steven Slate VST plugin, but I'd really like to have access to the individual stems in Reaper. I can not for the life of me figure out how to do that.

Thanks to everyone who has taken a crack at it so far, I really appreciate it!

I have no experience with Slate Drums but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a tutorial on Youtube explaining how to do it.

Here's a video from Slate on this https://reaperblog.net/2015/11/custo...nus-in-reaper/

Its actually really easy and you can save a template to save time later.

I just dropped the files into Reaper, surprised it's any slower. Cheers

You probably had "follow project tempo" ON in the media browser.

Ah I've only just started using the media browser to import media instead of drag and drop as I need to run as supervisor.

I think if that option is ON, it doesn't matter how you add the media (via the browser or regular drag and drop).

I had to mix at low volume, cause the cat was in the room and I had a hangover from yesterday.

Hello.

I had a go at mixing your song.

Here is the link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AEa...ew?usp=sharing

If you're accustomed to the demo you'll find my mix a bit thin in the low-mid/mid range. I lowered the rhythm electric guitars in that portion and up'd the Drums and Bass. Also, what you ge, as a trade-off for clearing out that area is space for the vocals.

I tried to get a loud/heavy drum like the Foo Fighters. The bass is also very present. I think?

The vocals were a challenge due to the fact that they came pre-packaged with EQ, compression and reverb.

PM if you want the WAV files - MIXED and the MASTERED version.

Let me know if you feel something need up'ing or down'ing?

It was fun to mix

I'm overwhelmed by the responses of this thread. That so many of you would take time out of your valuable free time to help a stranger on the internet is remarkable.

I'm going to check out these mixes tonight and tomorrow!

Thank you to EACH of you that have responded. And for those of you who just recently uploaded a mix, I'll respond to them individually as well.

What a cool community this is!

Mix definitely has a slightly heavier feel than the original. Drums sound "bigger". I feel like the vocals were slightly hot, at least in the Chorus. Otherwise, this is a cool mix. Thank you!

Whoa. This mix is hot hot hot! Drums are definitely big and powerful. I think they are are almost overwhelming in parts, but the song definitely has a raw power that I dont think it had before. Bass sounds great...I'd like to try running it through a bass amp simulator I just got. I've played around with it and its night and day in terms of tone.

I would definitely like to grab the WAV files from you if you have time!

Would I be able to have the WAV files for this mix? I want to dump the WAVs into my project file, and tweak the bass line at that section as well as add a cabinet simulator that I recently got that sounds really good on this track.

Thanks again!

Tweaked again.

nice song. I was going to give it a go but when I downloaded the files I noticed you had everything already panned. Not a big deal because I can always mono the tracks but I also noticed you left your effects on the vocals. Is there anyway you can leave all vocal tracks dry or did you record with effects on?

This is really cool !!

Hearing all the different mixes is really very interesting.

I didn't download the stems so this is speculation on my part but

it seems to me (on my system)that the bass guitar in every mix is the weakest link.

What I mean is, to my ears it's the thing preventing all these real good mixes from sounding GREAT.

Just my $.02

Question for the folks mixing:

Was the bass track an issue or something that demanded attention ??

Very cool tune and good work by everybody !!
