Default Question about noise

I have a really good Mogami cable with Neutrik noiseless ends. I will go through my HD500X into my Scarlett 2i2. There is some noise in there that I noticed. I tried using a hard gate to pull the noise out when not playing but when I let a note sustain, that noise blends with the tail of the note.

At the same time, it happens when I record bass. I noticed that when I unplug the power to my Mac, the noise goes down a little bit. I have tried plugging into various power sources and have the same problem universally.

Do any of you have a suggestion I can do to cut out that hum and the high pitched noise?

Thank you

Are all connections balanced? Does the noise change when moving the mouse or opening programms?

it's a bus powered interface, right? try a ferrite bead on the USB cable.

please note that the power-related problem may be not the only one you're encountering. some pickups hum, some preamps hum (well, technically all do, but on some it's more pronounced), a poorly shielded bass can be noisy as well. Scarlett's inputs can be noisy if you have the "inst" mode on.

I am using 1/4 inch cable.

It doesn't happen when I open And close programs.

I have Fishman Fluence Modern (active) pups.

I don't have this issue on my friend's DI setup. I do on mine at my aunt's. Not sure about my house. I was going to try at church.

Can you make a test with a laptop on batteries? I guess it's just a ground loop. The cheapest solution will be a DI Box imo.

When I unplug my power and set it away from my setup, it doesn't have as much noise. In fact, it's almost completely quiet.

What is this DI box you speak of?

I just see that the hd500x has balanced output. So first option is to connect it with XLR cables to the Scarlett. There's also a ground lift switch on the HD500x.

Default try this for noise problems...? a few ideas

RFI or radio frequency interference can be caused by alot of things... like a ham radio operator near by... or radio station... power lines etc.

The most important part of getting rid of CONDUCTED INTERFERENCE is to establish that you have a good, solid earth ground. Earth ground is usually tied to a large water pipe in the basement...etc check it and/or test outlets with voltmeter.

use Power Conditioners for your electricity... used in all major studios...

I agree with ferrite... they use them on a few radio stations etc... to cancel out RFI (looping the usb cable (or wire) around a ferrite donut loosely)

make sure your power chain has 3 prongs (the ground!)

try separating your electrical cords to different wall outlets... (use extension cords if you have to) hopefully on completely different circuits.
[a different breaker on your circuit breaker box]

RADIATED INTERFERENCE... I have picked up radio stations with unbalance microphone cables... and sometimes even on balanced cables. Especially if the shielding was broken. (think of tv coaxial cable the cheap black plastic stuff - they work great but if the foil is broken it is more subject to noise or static) I have had brand new balanced cables not work well because of the integrity of the connector of the 1/4 inch plug.

Some people even make a home made FARADAY CAGE. Old computers were almost totally encased in metal - they helped to really keep out RFI etc. NOW alot of pcs and equipment have plastic sides etc which invite interference. encasing a pc (or other electronic device) in a metal cage could work wonders... I am no expert but the above ideas have helped me over the years... gl

Reminds me of my Gibson Les Paul with open coil 57 Classics ... I always needed one meter distance minimum to PC/Mac and interface.

My old Epiphone with the same pickups but with covers didn‘t have this problem after buying high end cables.

Long story short ... if you mainly encounter this problem with guitar and bass recordings, first buy high end guitar cables with good shielding ... and for sure as recommended above a good USB cable too.
Second research in guitar forums, how to improve the shielding in the guitar itself. Better wiring and shielding foil in the cavities can do wonders here.
