Default Nothing is Working

I was testing out some changes I had made to my 'TWang' JSFX. Inevitably the test recordings turned into a song.

TWang is a plucked string synthesiser, based on the Karplus-Strong physical modelling algorithm. All of the sounds are generated using TWang, except for the kick, clap and hi hat sounds, which are made with the 'TAL Noisemaker' VST synth. Oh, the vocals are not made with TWang either.

The song is here - https://soundcloud.com/thewastersoft...social_sharing

Started out interesting, but it was too much hi freq sounds that made it uncomfortable to listen to, for me at least.

Not my thing but I would agree that it is shrill sounding

Right to get it down quickly, captured something, put a smile on my face. Words and delivery sold it to me and the rythmn is great fun!

Thanks people for you helpful advice. The song is supposed to be a bit edgy, but it's not meant to be unbearable

I have remixed it to tone it down a bit. I removed a lot of high frequencies that I can't actually hear, so hopefully it will sound a bit more like I'm hearing it. I also made some tweaks to the bits that I can hear. I'd be grateful if I could get some feedback on the new mix (as in critical feedback, not audio feedback).

Is that the new mix in the OP?

Yeah, it's not bad.

It's not my usual genre so I wouldn't be a good judge but if I were mixing it, I'd try making more use of the stereo spectrum, try an 80ms delay to the vocals and maybe some plate, probably just use distortion on vox for accents... off the top of my head.

The vocals seem like they could use a bit more expression of frustration or something... hard to put into words.

I was also confused. It sounded better, but the timestamp for the upload didn't match?!
Anyway, this was much better.

Agree on that, but easier said than done.

Can also be done by adding more and more 'annoying' sounds to raise the 'stress level'?

Yes, that was my strategy.

I have updated the file again. I wanted to change a few words in the lyrics, so I re-recorded the vocals for the verses, hopefully with a bit more expression of frustration.

I played with adding a short delay and with the level of distortion, as suggested. It didn't really work for me. The delay just seemed to muddy it up, and I feel that the level of distortion is about right. But I did add 80 ms initial delay to the reverb on the chorus vocals.

The frustration does come thru a bit more now. I'd clip off the breath parts.

The distorted guitar part sits right on top of the vocal. Shouldn't it be more to the left or right a bit? You could roll some highs off of it too... so it doesn't compete with the vocal so much.

In the end, the only opinion that matters is yours.

What do you think of it?

Like this better.
Maybe lesser distorsion on the vocal to begin with and increase it?
Maybe also less instruments/sounds in the beginning? The 'frustration' level seems to be too steady.

Thanks Mikael, that could work.
