Default Converting OMF & AAF to Reaper

OMF and AAF files are very flexible session formats that can carry basic and in some cases rather complex information.

There are as many flavours of OMF and AAF files as there are DAWs and conversion programs, but first :

Converting native session formats
AATranslator can convert much more than just OMF and AAF. In fact, it can convert most sessions formats directly these days. Check out their website for information to see whether or not your desired session format is covered.

General workflow
  1. Export an OMF or AAF from the source DAW or application

such as Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro X (with helper tools), Cubase, Nuendo, Pyramix, Sequoia, Protools and probably more.

  2. Convert the OMF or AAF

For Reaper there is basically one option. AATranslator. Its documentation has details on how to export the OMF or AAF so that AATranslator can read and convert it to a Reaper session.

In other words, AATranslator is your best bet by far. It is in active development and you can get a test convert done by contacting the author via the website.

OMF only does mono, AAF can do stereo and more
This can be a factor, depending on the material.

AAF with MXF media files
One of the problems is that Avid has introduced a new media format called MXF. The Media Composer (video/film editing software) will now use MXF files when exporting an AAF(or OMF if it still supports that). Those files are not always convertible with AATranslator, and since Reaper cannot read MXF files, this may be a problem.

Luckily, many of us who work in post production have Protools, that can often convert such an AAF and its MXF media in to a Protools session that has nothing but WAV files. When using the Import Session window in Protools, copy all the media. That converts it to WAV.

This Protools session (any version!!!) is readable and convertable by AATranslator. I'm using this very process to edit and mix a show right now in Reaper.

I'll keep updating this post as things develop. The current beta of AATranslator can convert Protools 10 sessions very well already.

First post is updated with some reasonably good information.

Feel free to add more tips and tricks about converting to the Reaper session format or AATranslator tips in general.

Also, don't forget that Reaper can import Samplitude EDL and Vegas Text EDL files directly.

Default convert videos

To convert OMG and AAF files, Aunsoft Video Converter is a good choice. It could easily convert various video/audio formats including OMG and AAF files.

I haven't downloaded this application but maybe its my failing eyesight but I couldn't see any reference to either OMF or AAF in the listed import formats and I've pretty much never seen any video content in an OMF.

Come to think of it I don't see RPP listed as one of the export formats either

Is it just me or am I missing something?

In fact there is another way to import OMF/AAF and other formats into Reaper.

OMF:

-Download Cakewalk by Bandlab (it is free) that natively supports OMF format.
-Install this expansion for Reaper that allows you to open Cakewalk projects.

http://forum.cakewalk.com/Sonar-to-R...-m3725610.aspx

-Now you can open OMF files in Cakewalk, save the project and open it in Reaper.
-It is stated on Cakewalk forums that AAF support is on the future roadmap so this method could also work for AAF sometime in the future.

AAF and other formats:

-Buy Magix Vegas (version Pro Edit or higher). If you are patient it occasionally appears on Humble Bundle. I got mine for 25$ also bundled with some other useful software.
-Vegas can open many commonly used formats (AAF, .prproj, XML, .fcpxml, .txt EDL...) and convert them to .txt EDL file that is natively supported by Reaper

AATranslator is probably more reliable and convenient but is also quite expensive so I wanted to share this alterntive in case someone finds it useful.

Clever workarounds .

Definitely worth a try when it's free, and Vegas is a good video editor.

Yeah, Vegas is great. I tried lots of other video editing programs and Vegas is definitely the one that suits me most. Plus it is compatible with Reaper's support of .txt EDL files so the interchange is really easy.
