This would be a great feature. Also a way to migrate these files into a folder within the projects folder hierarchy instead of a catch all "all projects" backup would be super useful

Tough I don't like to code for such core/essential features,
here is a demo of how a script could behave:
(limit set to 5, sorting is simply made from alphabetical timestamp, and backups in a special backup folder)
Timestamp pattern is strict to be sure no other files is deleted.
(maybe I should stick to REAPER default time pattern EDIT: done. (not in screenshot))

@Coachz
Nope,
Script deleting files needs careful testing :P
I modified it so that it works without much settings,
- automatic backupat save
- add timestamp via reaper
- no subfolder (like .rpp) which is the defualt behavior for saves

@Coachz
Due to the sensitive nature of this action, I prefer to be prudent and maybe not release it with my other script (certified 100% safe :P) at least for now
I think the pattern is solid enough to not delete any wrong file, but lets have other users be sure of that first.
here is the script : https://gist.github.com/X-Raym/015d7...6b397daa5a5ed7
This is what your setting have to be:
Please test it carefully before using this on critical projects.
Thx !

are we still "fighting" for this feature ?
Backup to a specific folder every minute keeping only X backup files!

Meanwhile, note that my script works. I used it as replacement of the default Save As option.

And this automatic backup needs to happen in the background, not lock up the user interface during the saving process.

Still needed :-)
If any Reaper developers or other employees are reading this, please would you now seriously consider implementing this request (which was submitted nearly three years ago).
We are not asking for some special or esoteric enhancement - we are simply asking you to finish the excellent job you started.
Having an automatic backup function is an essential and very valuable core component of Reaper, but it should not require customers to delve into the file system at regular intervals to manage the space utilisation.
So come on guys, please move this up your priority list !
Thanks.

I removed the script from this gist link for easier code management,
so it is with all my other premium scripts,
though I'm considering releasing it if devs don't do something about this request.

Area selection is taking major place for the new release. Cockos team is a short dev team made of maybe 2 or 3. lets be patient , this will come for sure
This and a freeze dedicated folder are two things that many really need.

Keep “XX’ most recent backups is a very much needed feature that should be built in. It certainly has been in in the others DAW environments I work in. Thanks X-Raym, for your efforts. Hopefully once dev’s release 6.14, they can work on this. +1

Just deleted 140GB after REAPER told me that it couldn't save anymore cause the disk was full.
Is there a feature request? Haven't found one.

Auto-saving in a specific folder would be a great addition, indeed.

My reaper is capable of having a dedicated Backup Files folder...
Guess yours too.
Go to Reaper preferences under Project , the field in the project saving and activate:
"Save to timestamped file in additional directory"
and write in the blank field /Backup Files. Use the slash, don't Forget

I actually have backups set to 1min (and still it usually crashes after like 59sec of doing lots of super complicated things) and my backup folder gets huge and unorganized very quickly.

1 min seems silly. Try 15 minutes. Reaper should run for weeks without crashing and if it does, solve that problem. It's 99% a bad plugin. My last crash was a few months ago due to a bad plugin.

I had 15, gave me headaches recovering work.. then I tried 10.. 5.. 2.. and when it crashed when set to 2 it still seemed like I had done many things that are hard to recover. 1 minute usually works well and when it crashes I still know pretty exactly what I have done and can check steps by step to find what has still been saved.
Reaper on big sessions crashes pretty regularly on me (like every other DAW I have used) and it would take me too much time and be too disruptive of my workflow to hunt down the reasons for every crash. It just became common practise when the wheel starts spinning endlessly to force quit Reaper, open a backup, save and keep working almost as if nothing happened and delete the backupfolder about once a week.

Try freezing all your tracks that have effects and media items on them. I have scripts to do that if you need them let me know .
Crashing regularly is unacceptable and you need to figure out a way to stop it. The only crashing I have is from a bad plug-in and I figure it out and get on with it and then I don't crash for months.

Hmm I have tried freezing in my workflow before, but I am not a big fan of it if I don't have to (for CPU/RAM) because I end up often moving and modifying stuff so I constantly have to freeze/unfreeze.
But I will certainly keep more of an eye on the crashes and write a note of what I was doing, along with saving the crash report and when I have time troubleshoot myself or in the forums.
I feel it happens most when saving projects, loading libraries like Play/Kontakt, switching between project tabs (might have been with different SR tough).. but I have to observe more thoroughly when it happens again and I will create a dedicated thread rather then derail this one.
Btw thanks for offering your scripts, will hit you up via PM if I will go the route of freezing more often.

sounds good. I would definitely suspect kontakt as it eats a ton of resources maybe just freeze that
