Item base time vs Beats base.
Hi
If we keep don't have tempo changes or don't intend to make tempo changes,
does it make more sense to keep the item timebase to "time" rather than "beats ( position, length, rate) . I am presuming that the item will be playing back with elastic algorithm if set to "beats" and lose a bit of fidelity vs when kept on time ?
Is that a correct presumption to make ?

When in Time timebase, media won't respond to tempo changes unless it's MIDI. For MIDI to follow time you need to apply the "ignore project tempo" action to any MIDI items manually.
Timebase has nothing to do with audio fidelity. If you don't do any tempo changes, then timebase settings will never come into effect.

Hi fox,
t
I was talking about audio loops and single hits not for midi items
i understand midi should not get affected. i presume that when we keep audio on beats sync and position, it will warp and use elastique audio. i hope i am making sense !

it will only warp if you change the tempo (and it will stay in the same place, relatively speaking) where as if you change the tempo & it's set to time, the audio fidelity will stay the same but it's relative position will move.

Yea, if you change tempo with timebase set to something other than time, then the items will change position and/or length. Then the stretched items will use whatever algo you have set to.
It seemed like you were confused about what timebase was and my confusion about that resulted from MIDI and audio responding differently to it, so I wanted to point that out.
Timbase only determines if items move/stretch when changing tempo and has nothing to do with sound quality. The pitch shift algorithm you choose determines the quality of playback but never does a thing unless items are stretched.
So you use Time Timebase when you want to alter the tempo without affecting items. Since you don't do any tempo changes, it doesn't matter what timebase you use, but different pitch algos will sound slightly different if you stretch items in any way (through tempo changes, stretch markers, alt+dragging item edge, etc).

There are two "beats" settings:
1. beats only
2. beats with rate
In case of (1) only the position of audio-clips will be changed. But they
won't be stretched.
In case of (2) the audio-clips will also be stretched.
